Why is the 5D MKII so loud?

Last week I had to take pictures in church during praying. The only noise you could hear was the trigger noise of my camera. That was embarrassing. This kind of attention is not what I need while taking pictures. Why is the 5D MK II trigger noise as loud as it is? Exept the mirror there are no mechanical parts which could create that noise?

If you put the camera in live view, only the shutter with cycle, its a bit quieter. If you REALLY want a silent dslr, you can buy a blimp as used by onset still photographers which makes the cameras totally silent.

Wow, I thought you were pulling his leg.

Wow, I thought you were pulling his leg.

I'm not a stills photographer, I'm a Video shooter who happens to own a 5D, so I'd never heard of a sound blimp. I thought you were screwing around with him, I looked it up and found the blimp, lol.

Very cool !!

Here is a guy who made his own.

Nice! But you can't have it all. I am afraid I have to do without.

Wow that is awesome!! I'd like to try making one of those but I know it'll be a complete failure...

The shutter is also a moving part that makes noise (allbeit less noise than the mirror). Granted there are quiter SLRs on the market, you have to remember that this is a full frame camera and the mirror is larger than that on a cropped sensor.

As mentioned, live view is always an option if a slower reaction time is acceptable since the mirror is locked up and all you will be hearing is the shutter.

If you do photography that demands a lower profile camera (both audibly and visibly) and you need good response time, a rangefinder is what you should be using since it doesn't use a reflex mirror to focus.

The other point is you have your head right up against the camera so it sounds loud, also how often do you shoot people praying?

Are you new to SLR camera's? This problem is as old as the SLR. This is what rangefinders and SLR blimps are for (if it's really that important). It's also why many events like classical, chamber music, opera, etc., are basically shot during dress rehearsal not actual performances.

again, higher end cameras have a silent shutter mode. its really super duper quiet

There is no such thing as a silent shutter mode. There is a "stealth" mode where the mirror is locked up you see a live view image and all you hear is the shutter opening and closing. You don't have good response time in these modes since you basically just turned your camera into a point and shoot.

not really. its almost silent. all you hear is a super quiet swoosh sound. i used it a few times at some events where i needed to be quieter
