Why is 3DR Solo only 599

Just saw that the 3DR Solo with 3axis gimbal is $599 at B&H as part of their independence day deal.

I had bought it last year at 1400 plus some more for other accessories. I am perfectly happy with it as I used it for my recent film. Without it I just wouldn't have got my shots. However a bit surprised that it is available at such a low price.

The only thing I am waiting for now is a same sized Go Pro 5 with higher bit rate to fit in this.

I would think that the market is glutted with copters or this might be the coming end of life for the item regarding the huge discount.

If you look at B&H they have a listing for the unit with the gimbal for $599. That is really tempting. Especially if you already have a GoPro. Do others here have it. What are your impressions? It seems like the Phantom 4 is the one to beat but at this price it's really tempting.

I have mostly used the Solo with Go Pro 4 in the 2.7K @50p mode. It was pretty good and the client liked it. You can see some of the shots in my film where I used it to fly over the mangrove forests at around 00:53 and then bring it down to ground level. Also inside the film there is a shot of flamingos where the Solo was flying low and parallel to them (2:08). link: https://youtu.be/qHLXDXF3KgU

there are also some other shots in the middle and end.

Though am not too happy that my investment in less than a year became half, but am happy that I have made my money in this film.

The copter competition is getting crowded and it seems all the companies are offering rebates and are around the $500 /$600 range. And they come with cameras which make them hugely cheaper than ones where u supply the go pro.

same boat here. I paid 1400+ last year. I guess the problem with 3DR solo is that it take them so long to release the damn gimbal. 12+ months and there is no new improvement much on the platform. Being a Sony user (A7s, A7r, A7r ii), i'm getting used to the fact that the value drop more than 50% after a year. I'm using Typhoon H now. Much better drone vs 3DR solo. My 3DR solo is collecting dust now.
