Why I'm Keeping the Sony A7S

This morning I thought about returning the A7S - I'm not 100% thrilled with its skin tone look and also the jello in full frame mode.

but still the image out of it - the dynamic range and that its a full frame camera is super useful as an overhead and a spy camera - and a special small camera. And also really nice 120 FPS slo motion makes it quite a useful tool. I think if everyone on the forum can work together to make a picture profile that has the most natural skin tone that would be amazing to have.

I'm going to keep experimenting on it.

It would be nice if it had better rolling shutter and a better skintone profile off the bat - but this is the camera we have now, and I'm going to work with it to make it as good as I can make it.

This camera is amazing for the price if you want a good all around camera that does what this can do. The fs100 can't touch the dr or low light. It shoots solid, detailed (not just sharp)1080p. Great color overall and even better with Filmconvert or Impulz. The jello is not that bad and you the crop mode is totally usable. More than usable. People are expecting to have a perfect cam for $2500 and that ain't happening. It's just a tool and it can create amazing work! I'm with you. I'm keeping it for sure and I'm going to make money with those. Period. It's awesome.

By definition a perfect camera would cannibalize margin from all other sales. So it is to the advantage of the manufacturers not to offer us the perfect camera.

try vision color's Impulz SLOG2 film emulation LUTs, they gives you beautiful skintones from your A7S. It's like having a vistavision camera loaded with Vision 3 negative in your pocket except you can shoot ISO64000 and have it look like 50D* :)

It's going to be hard to justify keeping my FS700+7Q when the A7S looks so good.

*OK not exactly. maybe assuming you did a 1080p telecine, but you get the idea

While the video is pretty darn good, I'm keeping it for the stills aspect too. Yesterday I was shooting a community recreation center and decided to pull out the A7s to play around while I was wrapping up the shoot. I shot some low available light RAW and some with strobe mixed in. But then I turned on the HDR function to see how that handled and used AWB (this rec center has every type of lighting you can throw at it). I was blown away by the results.

Auto HDR at rev using auto WB at 800 ISO using the Sony 24-70 F4. There is fluorescent, halogen, LED, mercury vapor from the street lights...

Nice!

How nice is the Sony 24-70 f4 IQ? It looks great in this picture. Is the image stabilization good?

I would like to get a fast 35 or 50mm native full frame lens for it. Great for a walk around and candid shots. Metabones is fine for video but the AF is slow with EF lenses.

I'm also very interested in your opinion on the 24-70. That image looks great!

As for fast native primes, right now it's only the 55 1.8 that is really fast, and apparently a very good lense. Their lens map is showing one more fast prime in the works "soon".

I like it. It's weird when you don't profile the lens for stills. It does make the camera a breeze to work with. One touch AF and while recording if you use touch AF while in MF mode it focuses smoothly. Makes the camera nice and compact and very very light. It's sharp and detailed ad well built. I have a metabones for the EF glass but I find I'm using the sony 24-70 more. IS is really good. I suggest going into your camera store and mounting one to see if you like it. I wanted at least one native lens for the camera and if there was one to have, I think the 24-70 is it.

Grab from the 24-70 in Cine2 mode with pro color.

I would say as a good walk around lens I wouldn't want to be limited to the 55 1.8. Why give a rats as about speed with this camera? You have ISO to take care of that. If you want to sing a light FF camera with some options in focal length, the 24-70 would be a better choice (my opinion).

Regarding speed and low light? This was shot handheld at 2 AM using 10,000 ISO with a 1/125th shutter speed (will be compressed here but trust me, for stills it's really clean!)

Crazy!!!

I only want the speed for aesthetics. F4 on full frame is okay but a 1.8 35mm would be more artsy. I'm strictly talking stills.

Dusty how do you like the A7s compared to the GH4 image and layout wise?
I prefer working with the Gh4. But I've had it longer. I like the UI of the Gh4 better. But they are such different cameras. Both have the pros both have the cons. It boils down to the shooter and the needs.

I would have to agree that I prefer the GH4 UI and ergonomics to the A7s. The A7 series are so incredibly small and I was really surprised when I first held it - doesn't help if you have larger hands. I screw on my Edelkrone Pocket Support when i'm walking around - helps a lot adding extra support for both stills and hand held shooting.

How many stops faster do you find it than the C300 for an image of equivalent quality?

I'm guessing 2?

Given that the C300 is fine at 4000 ISO.... 16,000 ISO in no-compromise quality is... amazing. 80,000 ISO actually usable... even more so.

I don't think 2. I'm not so sure even 1 stop better ISO.
