Why I am not getting mine with P2

What will be interesting to see is whether it becomes possible to just rent the P2 Cards on the rare times you absolutly have to have them

That is the very core of the HVX-Club that I created for DVXusers purchasing the HVX through EVS:

"We will enroll you in the HVX Club which entitles you to 50% off P2 Card Rentals from our Rentals Department for 6 months after you buy the camera, with free shipping anywhere in the country for 1 week or longer rentals. That way you can hold out for the bigger cheaper cards, but still shoot HD in the interim."

Done and done. :)

More info on the HVX club:
"HVX Club membership also gets 50% off certain 82mm Formatt filters as quantities last. You will also get 10% over cost on certain Portabrace and Kata bags, as well as certain Audio Technica shotgun mics and Miller tripods."

cool club ;-)

i also think P2 is extremely cool. of course it is right now an expensive investment, but if you had a 128GB P2 card for free you would not say "i do not want P2". you meant it is not worth the money as of yet. to same it might not be.

look at photography: many old-school-hardcore-analogue guys have long ago switched over to digital photography onto SD/CF cards or such. they enjoy the IT-based workflow and P2 will bring it to our prosumer filmworld. here it will also take time for us "old-school hardcore" guys, but there is no way around it. rewinding HDV tape is very 20th century ;-)

I do believe it is the same as when I switched from 35mm to CF cards, as you said. The file sizes are larger, but the principle is the same. The first time I shoot on P2 is going to be the same as when I trusted the CF card for the first time. Hard pill to swallow at first, but realizing all the time it just felt right. :)

DVCPRO-HD has a maximum data rate of 100 megabits per second, so FW100 would be adequate.

Hmmm... I suspect this isn't true! 100 Mbps probably wouldn't handle a 100 Mbps data stream; there's at least some overhead.

I don't say this to be pedantic; I'm wondering if anyone here knows the details of FW overhead. Basically, if I'm using a laptop to capture to a FW hard drive, what's the overhead, and how close does doing this for a 100Mbps stream get to FW400's maximum? I don't know that I'd trust this approach if overhead brings it up to, say, even 300Mbps total... since disk buffering/access schemes might need a little extra leeway...

I'm not going to be buying any P2 cards for a while. I'll probably only use dvcpro50 and HD when i want to shoot green screen. I'm gonna wait for the firestore to come out or possibly buy a 12" powerbook if that will do the job.

Will I be able to change frame rates while shooting to tape? I'm gonna be filming for a BMX video and I realise that its not practical shooting in HD for this but it would be cool to bump the frame rate for some nice slomo shots.

Nerra is the 10,000th DVXuser member.. :) just a little FYI.

What will be the rental rate of the 8GB cards for non-members?

I'm trying to remember what the price of the rental cards would be with the 50%... Rush told me once...

Almost makes me wonder to just buy the camera with out the cards... then rent the cards for my shoot...

So even if it cost me a grand to rent the cards for six weeks... I'd still save another $2,400 (off the bundle price of the camera and two cards) that I could put into my feature... just thinking...

i would get at least one.. even if its just a 4gb card. It would be torture to have your camera sitting next to you with no HD glory.

I second Jarred's suggestion, shooting on a whim is just too cool to pass up, and owning one card is next to imperative. The rental rate is $125/day per 8GB card, so 50% off is $62.50. If you want it for 7 days, you just pay for 3 days. DVXusers also get a flat 15% discount on all other Rentals, and we just added 7 Chrosziel matteboxes, 10 wide angle lenses for DVX's, an SDX900 with HD Lens and DVCPRO50 deck, 10 Kinoflo Diva 400's, 8 Arri Kits, 4 MKH416 Mics, and 2 Ktek K102CC CF poles. DV Rack + PC

DV Rack + PC

I love the idea of the P2, but weak impulse control has to compete with budgets. The prices will come down fast enough. You could get used to the camera at DV levels first...

Hopefully, without hijacking this thread, and acknowledging that some of us are looking for alternatives to P2 initially, I would like to put up a straw man solution:

Dell D810 with ATI X600 Radeon, 1920x1200 pixel LCD, 100GB 7200RPM disk, 1394 Cardbus card and put DV Rack on it.

Admittedly, this makes better sense for me because I need a HD monitor as well.

My questions are, will this suffice as a HD monitor and how risky is it hoping SeriousMagic will come up with DVCPRO HD add-on (or some intelligence that will accept the stream from the HVX) in a timely fashion?

I use FCP on a G5, so I'm not looking to do editing on the laptop like the other poster. I also am hoping that the screen resolution won't be a problem like it is with the Mac laptop. And I'm really not interested in toting my G5 around
