Why has this song been speeded up?

I'd assume they speed up the tempo and overcrank the camera. That way they're singing faster than it should be. So now when they play it back after conforming to 24 or 30 frames, it will put the band in slow motion, but their mouths will still match the words.

Spot on. This is actually common practice with music videos these days & is a very useful technique.

When you mean by "overcrank the camera" do you mean by setting the camera to capture frames more than 30 fps?

That is correct. Thus a DSLR might not be the tool for that job. Or, if you aren't delivering in 1080p, your timeline can be in 720p.

How much are you planning on slowing it down?

Enough just so the band/singer will move slower in post production while their lips will still sync up with the song like what the crew are doing in the videos I've linked.

I'm not actually doing any music videos. I'm just interested in the workflow.

Well you need to figure out (1) what your final framerate will be. We'll say, for example, you want it in 24p. Now you also need to find out (2) what options of framerate you have to work with. Let's say you have a camera that shoots in 24p, 30p, and 60p. So you choose 60p because that's the most extreme from your 24p selection. So to figure out the difference between the two, divide 60 by 24, and you get 2.5. So you need to speed the music up 2.5x, or 250%. While playing this back, they will have to follow along at that speed.

After the shoot, conform the footage to 24p, and you'll pretty much be set right there.
