Why does rendering takes so freaking long?

well, for a clip that maybe 25 second long with let's say wide screen (black bar), a deep scratch and a color correction takes any where between 4 - 8 minutes.

3-way color correction and widescreen filters should be realtime (on a dual 2.5 at least)
Check to see if the effects in your effects list are in bold. If so they should be realtime and not require any rendering.
I'm not sure what deep scratch filter is so can't say.
Now this assumes it doesn't have to do a any conversions. If you have DV footage in a DV sequence (running at matching 23.98 or 29.97 speed as your source clips and your sound is at 48k then at least with widescreen and color correction there is no rendering requirement.

if you have a number of layers doing a lot of filters or if your sequence doesn't match your clisp then it will take some time to render.

I'll echo the last post -- it is important to match the sequence settings with the clips you are working with. If you disable all of your filters and you still need to render, the FCP is also performing some (time-consuming) conversion for you.

Rendering a simple crop and a 3-way color correction (I don't know what "deep scratch" is, either) doesn't take nearly that long on my humble 1.25 GHz G4. If conversion is taking place, either make the settings match, or convert the clips before you import them into your timeline.

I've noticed useing the widescreen filter compared to croping the image manually is dramatically slower in rendering time.

that's some system you got there. did you set your scratch disks right? if they are organized, it should help boost in speed.

FWIW, widescreen and crop are roughly the same speed on my G4, and both will play back in realtime in "Unlimited RT" mode. (With "Safe RT," however, I have to render the clip which happens at about 1/2 realtime speed ...)

hmm, I don't think I have anything set special. I mean, I just installed it and started playing with it to learn.....
Maybe I'm supposed to "set it up" a certain way or something?

hey dvpixl, should I of done something regarding the scratch disk?

I'm opening it up now to see what the current settings are.

lol, i don't know what to look for hahahahaha..... wtf, lol....

Minimum allowable free space of scratch disk 2047

Limit capture 30 min

On top these 3 are chached: Video capture, video render & audio render

First; Turn off all effects and see if it plays in real time. Make a edit chnage and see if it still plays in real time (no red line, no rendering)
Now turn on one effect at a time and check for the renderign lines.
Is the color correction and widescreen the ones that came with FCP?
I suspect the real reason is Magic Bullet.

Magic Bullet takes forever. It's a nice plugin, but really not the smartest one regarding rendering. It is absolutely normal.
