why does office space work

Krestofre

That's the travesty isn't it? It becomes no longer funny but it's too real. WHich is a nightmare. You read Dilbert or watch the scenes about 'wearing a HAwaiin' shirt and instead of wanting to laugh you get almost depressed.

You have Officers in charge who are complete morons. They call in Consultants who are really there to INbed their way into the organization. The Co-workers need to all rot in hell (except for the hot interns they bring in)........................................

One day you look up and are a 'Cavemn in a suit' (Well put!).

They will fire you in blink of an eye but if you don give them a minimal of 2 weeks notice you're an asshole.

I lietrally could not get fired. It was so bizarre that I eventually just Quit (I was starting my own company doing the same thing). For almost a year I was praying to be fired; coming in 1 to 2 hours late everyday, smoking out front of the office main entrance after being told a 100 times not to, playing football in front of the main entrance with the lead IT guy (Here's a tip; always befriend the LEAD IT guy; it pays), telling the Lead Consultant to **** off and then telling everyone in the company how he was sued by a former patient of his for sexual abuse (background checks reveal a bit of info), walking out of meetings and not coming back (I did this alot) or would just refuse togo to the meeting.

See? I ran everything, hence they could not fire me and THEY KNEW IT. And inthe meantime, I used all of their resources to start my own company. This is what they get for being assholes.

Hehe... I wonder how that translates into being a professional on the set?

It's been a while, but I really liked that movie... I guess it's time for a re-run.

Oh man, are we all freakin' computer scientists?
There is an explanation. Back in eighties/early nineties, being a 'programmer' was creative, inspiring, and fun. We had all these new toys, a lot of unexplored territory to cover (digital everything: music, imaging, video, games, BBS, etc). I think software development is a lot like film making, so it's logical it has been attracting a lot of creative folk.

THEN, programmers disappeared. The corporate job descriptors and buzzword spinners invented 'computer systems analysts', 'software engineers', 'network administrators', 'information technology specialists', 'consultants', 'architects', and what not. We keep doing the same thing (mainly), but our official job description and the whole culture around computer technology has changed. I found that (former) computer geeks are the largest group of people transitioning into film making that I know of. Accountants have never had any fund in first place, but computer folks have, and when it's lost, it's natural to look for other outlets to express their creativity.

CharlesPapert-
Yeah, I've always seen two stories in that movie, but it has never really bothered me.

I think it works so well becuase of how well is satires office life. There are just so many of those moments that you can see a coworker, a friend, or dare I say - yourself in. It's a great movie that I still watch at least once a year.

Maybe I should get back to work. Damit, where are those cover pages for the TPS reports?

BTW- John, those are some great stories. You definately ran that place!

This movie rang so true to me....

I have had the misfortune/fortune for working for a variety of computer game companies, and seeing this movie after having quit that business was like mental nirvana....too real it was surreal.

Having met Charles P and finding out that Charles worked on the film, makes it all that much better.

Thank god I'm self employed now.

Ha! I just read this great article in the Washington City Paper today. I think it explains a lot.

http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/cover/2005/cover0826.html

Great article Barry. I espicially liked these parts:
"And it’s all the bullshit that’s really important. If you don’t buy into all that, it doesn’t matter how well you do your job."

"I always make a point of surveying the faces of my co-workers. Young or old, senior or entry-level, sales or creative, they exude glum resignation, a flash of resentment now and then. It’s the expression of someone being forced to sing naked at gunpoint."

So true. I remember having that same look on my face when I worked for a bank years ago ...

"Hey Peter man, check out channel 9 ...it's the breast exams!"

Forgive me for being naive, but how were you involved in the production Charles?

Ah, the shameless plug, eh Mr. Papert? I was thinking about getting the DVD that is out right now, guess I'll wait a couple months. Impressive resume by the way, most impressive.

Ha ha! That's hilarious, John. I haven't actively tried to get fired but I routinely disobey all the HR rules. When I reach my breaking point, I'll try all your methods and see if I have any more luck getting the axe! (All except for the smoking--maybe I'll pretened to snort lines of coke in front of the main entrance instead.)

Cheers,

Josh

John, you're my new hero and ...

I used all of their resources to start my own company. This is what they get for being assholes.

You give me hope.
