Why does my image not look sharp

Hi all, I recently purchased a DVX 100B European model and I'm having difficulty getting really clear shots of wide open landscapes. I'm shooting 25p with the settings that are recommended with this. When I get home I plug the footage into my projector and although the close ups of my actor are great, the scenes of him walking in vast open landscapes look slightly blurred or out of focus, what am I doing wrong?

Some screen grabs would help with specifics.

But overall, the DVX is always going to do better (great, even) with close-up or medium shots than it will with wide shots. Just the nature of the chip size and the DV codec.

Did you have to stop the image down a lot? You might be losing some resolution due to diffraction at higher F/Numbers. Make sure to use the ND filter and avoid going higher than f/8.

Thanks but I try to stick at f5.6 at all times. The film is going onto the big screen when it's finished so I was hoping for really great images from this camera. I bought it thinking the shots of the man walking in wide open spaces would be as sharp as the mediums and close ups. If I put some screen grabs up I don't think you'd notice it because it looks great at computer size. I am focusing by numbers as well. Am I stupid in thinking that you would have to have 99% on the focus as this is what is recomended for infinity?

It will give you great images if you play to its strengths, just like any other camera. Unfortunately, a full wide shot is a challenge for any 1/3" camera, 4:3 and DV especially. And the smaller your person is in the shot, the less information there is to resolve detail -- to say nothing of then blowing up the picture to large size.

99% is the farthest focus. But that doesn't mean it's best for your shot, especially if you have elements both far away and not-so-far away.

Thanks, How would you recommend getting the best focus of a subject walking towards then right past the camera on a vast open hillside?

Yeah, I agree with Jim, I think the real issue here is blowing up standard dv codec on a projector might certainly be causing some softening of the image.
