GH3 Why Does G6 have Focus Peaking but not the GH3?

Looks like he changes the mode to me.

It looks like he turns the lens ring and focus assist/peaking is activated while still in movie mode.

He says "peaking" and I think also "mode" - if someone can translate his German maybe it can be determined if he's in movie mode.

If the G6 behaves like the GH2, the manual focus assist window doesn't appear during video recording.

Then I fail to see why having peaking is so important. I never had a problem focusing a GH2 with zoom mode before recording. With my C100 is zooms AND peaks during recording and it's rad.

It's not known yet if peaking stays on during record or even if there in movie mode at all, although it looks that way to me.

If it isn't there during record, I suppose it's better than nothing.

Helpful, yes, but the point behind peaking is that you can be more sure of what what you have in focus during recording, without having to press a button to magnify the screen or ruin your ability to continuously see the composition in the screen (which a magnifying box will do).

...if anyone's a member at eoshd's forum, a guy named julian who is doing the g6 vs. gh2 comparisons and obviously has the camera in hand is responding to requests. I made one for him to check focus peaking handson, but since I had to register as a new member, my first post is moderated before it posts. Others requesting wouldn't hurt...to get direct feedback from someone who's got the camera. Besides verifying that it works while recording...he could give us some feedback on how well it works. Andrew ???

It's a $750 consumer camera/with lens.

I think you are confusing me with the OP.

You said that the point behind peaking is to have it during recording. I'm saying it's a cheap $750 camera and we shouldn't expect too much. Good it's there at all.

Let's find out first if it's true or not.

....well I knew I'd read something to the effect to believe it had it during recording

I have big doubts about this, as the very similar focus-assist zoom function built into the GH2 and GH3 does NOT function when the camera is recording.

I suspect there's not enough processing power in the camera's Venus engine to handle video recording and focus peaking at the same time.

....for the zoom focus assist to work simultaneously, the camera would have to process two images streams at the same time, unlike focus peaking , which would be a simple overlay ...but, we'll know soon enough

Magic lantern creates a peaking overlay with the lowly digic 4 processor on the T2i and T3i. It even works with wave form, histogram and boosting the bit rate to 60mbps simultaneously. If that single dog processor can do that, there is no question that the GH3 and most likely the G6 can do it.

The G6 has virtually every feature I've been looking for. Can't wait to see it in the real world.

Cheers,

Pete

Assuming that the actual processing power is as good or better with the Venus engine.

Looking at the G6 demo video the focus peaking feature is also using the same focus-assist zoom-in effect the GH3 has, which is why I wonder about peaking while recording video, as none of the GHx cameras can utilize focus-assist while recording.

Not being a technician my advice would be to be careful in assuming what a processor can or can not do - especially without real knowledge of its architecture. But hope may be applied..... :-)

Would you have thought that the 5D could output 14bit RAW to CF Card? I know I would never have thought that a $3000 DSLR could do that.

Look, maybe the GH3 can (output peaking) and maybe it genuinely can't. But, you can see what the 5D is now capable of after being hacked by a few individuals with far less resources than Canon themselves. It just goes to show how much they cripple these cameras considering the tech that is inside them.

Yeah and look what hacking has been able to do for the GH2 but yet nobody has been able to add peaking to the GH2. Firmware is different for every device. Some of them have hooks or language that can be altered to make it do certain things. 14raw on the 5D is something the camera is already capable in stills mode. The hackers just modified the burst mode to try to keep it running for a sort of video recording option. This was not inventing a whole new feature but taking features already in the camera and reworking them. A camera is not a full fledged computer running a full programming language.

Even the GH2 hacks for the most part are not inventing brand new features. They are just enhancing what the camera already does. Take 12800 ISO for example. The camera can already do it in stills mode. the hack just turned it back on for video. basically in the firmware it was an on/off switch. Easy to hack. Maybe not as simple as that but my point is it is much simpler to do things like that than to program a whole new feature the camera isn't designed for.

Again I'm not saying it is impossible just that you can't really compare it to other systems because you don't know what the firmware can and cannot do. Adding firmware peaking if possible will be a rather intensive undertaking and one that the experts have not been able to do on the GH2. So why would the GH3 be any different?

Everybody is an armchair engineer on what their cameras are or are not capable of, or how the big camera manufacturers are "hobbling" these cameras, blah blah blah.

Considering the level of technical expertise demonstrated by many of these, I find the fact that they so dogmatically state what is or isn't possible to be rather laughable.
