Why does 24pN give me 85min & 24pA give me just 35min?

When recording 720p to P2 in the HVX200, isn't 24pN 23.97fps while 24p is 29.97fps? So why does 24pN say I've got 85 minutes of record time and 24p says I've got 35 minutes of record time. If there's a 20% difference between 23.97 and 29.97 it seems that going from 24pN to 24p would only sacrifice 17 minutes of valuable record time. What's the deal?

Not exactly. I think that you are thinking of the difference between 24P and 24PA, like on the DVX. 24PN is 24P native. On the HVX (IIRC) 24P is actually shooting 60 frames per second (creating duplicate frames as necessary) to adhere to a 60hz data stream (If I recall Barry's book correctly), as opposed to the 24 fps of 24PN.

If you are shooting to the P2 card, 24PN is usually the best way to go. The over 60 modes are typically used if you are sending the signal out to an HD deck or Hard Drive.

Thanks Jim. Now that brings out another question...So what is the reason the HVX on 24P is shooting 60fps instead of 30fps? Is it because it's HD? I'm used to my DVX (the whole 24pa vs. 24p) and the HVX/P2 workflow is fairly new to me.

NEVERMIND YOU ANSWERED IN YOUR EDIT, THANKS

I'm pretty sure (although I'm sure someone else can clarify) that the DVX uses the same pulldown in 24P that the HVX does. 24 progressive frames recorded over 60 frames, with duplicates as necessary to conform. 24PN has no pulldown. It is actually only storing 24 frames every second. 24P on both cameras is true progressive (a whole frame at a time), but it still has to conform to broadcast standards to go to tape, which works on a 60hz cycle, demanding that 60 frames per second. (just so you know, I am in way over my head  )

24PN is a Godsend for storage purposes. it really stretches the use of P2 cards.
