I am trying to decide whether FS100 or Scarlet that will be coming our in NOV 3rd with new updated to the cam I mean FS100 looks as good as RED to me? I know they have better dynamic range but why do ppl that use RED and RED themselfs insist on saying RED is the best and 1080p is the past and 4k is the future? When clearly it won't be for a while IMO, besides we can't even see 4k on the web unless u have a 4k monitor, is 1080p really not HD anymore????? Is this true should I go with the Scarlet?? Just don't want to make a bad decision.

If the FS100 looks as good as Red to you, the choice is simple - go with the Sony now and start shooting some cool stuff :)

5k/4K and RAW is all about acquiring the footage in a higher res and then delivering a job in the format required. If HD works for you and your clients, the FS100 is ideal... no need to wait for Scarlet or Epic etc!

It all depends on what you want to shoot and what your jobs are.

As they say... it totally depends on what jobs your booking.

I'm big on Red, started shooting on #99 near the beginning. Right now, in my little world of jobs, FS100, 7D, F3 are what producers want, and end clients just like "big sensor" DOF. Everyone wants fast ingest for post and minimal gigs of raw footage to download on location. On a typical Red day I wrap with 100-200 gigs of footage vs 16-64gb on the other cameras listed. Less download time and we don't need a dedicated download tech throughout the day. Most of my TV spots jobs are still finishing in SD and the web content is cut at 720 or 1080.

"Future proof" is not needed in my little world, ads and marketing content. I still get 7D/5D bookings and show up with the FS.

Buy the FS, shoot for a few months, sell and move on to the next flavor. The costs are so low and resale is easy.

Well thank you. I just don't know what camera would be the best for the money I mean I keep hearing RED this RED that. but don't you get more with the fs100? maybe I'm wrong new her so please go easy on me..

I hear the workflow with RED is a pain is it hard to use avchd on Final cut pro x?? sorry I'm a NOOB I do mostly Music Video's by the way..

With Red you get RAW footage, as Davidwinters said... you then have to use a Red software application (Red-CineX) to convert the footage from 5K/4K (whatever you shot) to your editing formats... you'd also be able to do a rough grade on the footage. The advantage is that you're working with metadata... the RAW files can be manipulated again and again, as tehy don't have shooting information 'baked in' like normal HD files... so even stuff like White balance/Colour temperature can be altered.

But, it really depends on your skills and experience. Most RED shoots use a DIT or have operators that know the workflow... and this is lot to learn on top of shooting great footage.

The FS100 or AF100 are all in packages - that's all you need to start shooting and then you get AVC's to edit with and it's a simple process. Of course, the quality isn't RAW... and they can't be pushed around as much... but, if you have never experienced high-end work flows, you'll be fine.

The Scarlet will need more than an FS100 to be functional - you'll need the Brain (body), an EVF or LD+CD touchscreen, an SSD or CF module plus SSD's or CF cards (nobody knows what system Scarlet will use) - plus a sidehandle (this holds the Red volt batteries)... and then you can 'pimp' out more from there... it's a 'modular' system camera that shares a lot with it's older siblings, the Epic M & X.

The easy solution, if you're new to this, is an FS100 - it's all in the box for you - just add an SD card and you're shooting... the 'looking ahead' solution is the Scarlet... but it will be more expensive than you think.

I have a RED and I can say 1080 is not dead. 90% of what I shoot on the RED is eventually down converted to 1080P. And yes the RED work flow is a pain without the proper hardware and software to handle it.

You will be fine.

But, if you are curious about scarlet as an option, and dont' need something next, week, won't be any harm in waiting until nov 3rd to see what canon and red announce on that day. supposed to be able to put down orders on nov 3rd after the red announcement.

just do your research. know what you will be shooting, what delivery your clients will be wanting, and buy what you feel is the best for you and your budget. Then don't look back, or feel bad if something else comes out the week better that is the next best thing. Make money, and buy something else later if you want.

buy what you need, when you need it. tech moves fast. But, everyone isn't going to be on 4k displays next week.

RED does feel the market (not just the high-end market) is moving to 4k and beyond, sooner rather than later. And, they are making that push. But, in general when they talk about 4k not being enough, they talk about it int he context of not being enough in terms of a suitable replacement for film. They feel 4k is the minimum in terms of resolution as a suitable digital alternative to film. In other words, they would say... if budget isn't holding you back, then why shoot in 1080p instead of 4k? Right now, that means your budget is far beyond someone considering a sub-10k camera. come nov 3rd after red and canon get done, we will see.

but, if you needed a camera today, and you bought the fs100, and went out and got some paid work with it... you should have paid for it several times over, and maybe even upgraded a few times (maybe even to 4k :) )by the time 4k has the kind of penetration into market segments it sounds like you are going after.

I'm drifting off topic , but consider focusing your dollars on good lenses and support gear. Buy a low cost Rebel or equivalent. Most of the support items are forward compatible with whatever camera you move to next. Don't expect specific gear to bring you work, focus on booking jobs and getting a labor rate, the necessary gear will fall into place after that. Rebel + external LCD + 24-70mm is a killer low cost setup.

I've owned a Canon 24-70 for about 8 years and use it every week. Last week I shot a commerical on the 7D w 24-70mm because it was small and appropriate, yet we had the budget to shoot Red One w PL glass.

So u can't color grade fs100 as well right? But in the end it all ends up h.264 lol, so why shoot 4k if you have to downres to 1080p anyway??? hmmmm well we will see what NOV bring I hope Canon knocks our socks off but I do luv Sony amd RED Scarlet seems good to Just very indecisive right now, want the right camera ,I do do allot of color GRADING but at the same time I have seen great footage from fs100 soo??? But RED say's they are the best??? The work flow with RED does concern me a bit I hate transcoding takes forever but that is not here or there ,I have even see a statement from the president of RED that DSLR user's should be ashamed of using DSLR's wich rubbed me the wrong way but meh going off topic AVCHD can Final cut pro X ingest it easily
