Why do people hate Michael Bay so much?

I watched Miami Vice last night. I told my wife that I might be the only one who really loves that movie. For some reason the look just connects with me. The cameras he used produced amazing images to me. I know..I know...

That's a REALLY interesting point. Yes, my response was just in terms of the script - I thought it was a huge let down from his other great work. And Colin Farrell is no great shakes either.

But it is a very interesting movie visually. Both with COLLATERAL and MIAMI VICE, Mann is pushing the envelope more with HD than anyone else. He's often using nothing but available light (even at night, which isn't much!) and it's really valuable in seeing just what HD can and can't do well.

Some of it, IMO, looks terrible, some looks great, much looks new and fresh, yes I agree.

You see, even in "Bay" mode Mann's still a much better director!

LOL. I can't argue with that. He is better. Some of Vice looks bad but for some reason I Like looking at it. I did not know he was not using ANY lights for the Night shots. I would work for either director. Hell...I am so broke right now I would get starbucks for Boll. No budget movies are even expensive.

I'm not really sure where the heart of the "hate Michael Bay" came from, but after reading some blogs from crew members who've worked with Bay, they really, really don't like him because of the way HE TREATS them. All goes back to how we manage people, two types of directors: benevolent and dictator.

If you behave like a KING on set, as Bay and Cameron have exhibited, then yes, you will not win the popular vote and you'll find people avoiding to work with you. No one wants to work with a director who screams thru a megaphone when you are standing only 3 feet away. Some directors feel they have to instill fear and others go the way of ease and kindness.

Working in the hotel industry I noticed when you give a person a small degree of power, he can behave like a jerk. I had a housekeeper once who helped me get rid of some bad head housekeeping rituals and then a year later after she became head housekeeper, she became what she had hated. Interesting that human condition.

So you can find yourself working on a 40 million project, how do you behave to get people to do what you want them to do? How do you behave when you find everyone looking up to you? How will you behave when you're on that first big commercial movie?

Dictator or Benevolent - your choice. It looks like Bay and Cameron have made their choice.

Yes. I can't speak for anyone else regarding the whole jealousy/etc business, but that's where I'm coming from.

And I would happily work for JC again, every day of the week and Golden Time on Sundays, rather than on an MB show, again.

I thought in the DVXuser agreement, you are suppose to keep threads positive? How does a thread finding out how people hate a director still stand?

All kidding aside, Transformers impressed me as just about the least of Bay's films.

Unless one pins the meter to the cool-factor of the creatures - which in and of itself is an exercise by hired artists - it's got no heart or depth or urgency. It no Bad Boys or The Rock. It's not even an Armageddon.

Cosign!!
Transformer looked really cool but the damn script and Shia's lines arrgggghhhh!!
Felt like it was written for 10 year olds by 8 year olds, and Shia's lines seemed like a bunch of adlibs. I had high hopes for this one. If I was a little kid, this would of rocked but it should have translated better to grownups who watched it as kids as well.
Each his own, Bay is very talented visually, but that's all that I get out of it. On the other hand, if I were him you can call me wack and garbage all you want as long as I get paid excessively to do what I love LOL

He works with the same crew mostly, so I guess they are used to getting yelled at.

You don't get used to it. You just remind yourself that you are being sufficiently well-paid, to tolerate it.
