Why do people hate Michael Bay so much?

It was startlingly bad.

I mean, being disappointed in a Michael Bay movie is almost impossible, for me, or so I thought...

...but yeah, looking at her made it a bit more bearable.

It was all over the place. Not to mention following the action scenes were nearly impossible.

It was one giant commercial.

Is it just me or is that the same soundtrack in like every Michael Bay movie?

Great interview with Boll over at RottenTomatoes. Dare I say my feelings of loathing are evolving into something more like respect? Yes, I'm a sucker. Anyhow, from the interview:

RT: Do you consider yourself more of a businessman or a director?

UB: I have to do both to keep going. This was the whole Michael Bay dispute, why I bashed him; if a guy gets always money pumped in his ass from the studios, and can do whatever he wants, and is not even on set where they shoot the real scenes from his movie because the CGI and second unit teams are doing it...I was pissed about this kind of approach; this guy has no responsibility. And I'm responsible, that's the reason all my movies come in on time on budget, which is totally the opposite of what the public thinks of me. Writing about me, I'm the worst, and a retard, whatever. But who did 12 movies in seven years on time, in budget, distributed it worldwide and financed the movies? Name one other guy in the business who did that. And this is the thing what I think a lot of people should at least show respect for that. Because if you see In the Name of the King, it's not that movie that, let's say 90 percent of the movies coming out are way smaller, with way less cast, and way worse in filmmaking in the technical sense -- but I do all that **** on my own! I don't have a CGI guy directing my movie.

I hate movies with lots of explosions and action and no real plot, so I'm not a Michael Bay fan. They make for good mindless fun, but I don't intend to take anything away from the film. Like Transformers - I watched it solely for mindless entertainment, nothing more.

I am I Old school TFG1 fan and I thought transformers was better the second time I saw it. Uwe Boll does have a point, If..IF what he is saying is true. To even say Uwe Boll has a point makes me want to puke in my mouth. I still like bad boys 1 and 2. Bay is just not that bad to me. Sometimes I want to see mindless action movies. And he does those very well.

You know what's funny to me? It's funny how so many people bash MB simply because his plots don't really exist, but I know first hand that developing a script with investors = no real creative control. Now you might say, well your not MB, but remember how much is invested in his films. I don't envy the man for having to answer to all the people who's money he's using to shoot those films with. For example: I was on a set here in philly about three weeks ago, not a small set, not a large set and we found out that Transformers 2 was prepping to shoot down the street. So I go check it out with some other crew guys on lunch and whoa! More trucks and equipment then I have seen since I walked past the spider man 3 production. Now I ask one of the PA's who are standing around, "Hey, what's up? Are they filming?" his answer is priceless, "No." he replys, they're just running some tests...

Do you honestly think you could not dull down your script in the face of 20 different investors constanly talking about changes and stipulations on the cash they've invested in your production of Transformers or Pearl Harbor etc etc....??? And lastly, why hate a guy who has to make those movies in the first place, it's not like he's really saying much of anything to begin with?

Well yes and no. I mean everything you say is right, but also, anyone who makes those deals clearly wants to make BIG MONEY movies. There are other filmmakers - the Coen Bros, Woody Allen who have spent their entire careers largely doing what they want by keeping their budgets low enough that no one really cares. What you're saying is true, but a director who works in those conditions chose to do so.

Seriously, who cares even if he wants to make movies with ZERO plot or originallity full of action scenes and explosions?

He is highly visual and likes making stuff look cool. Just because he's not a storyteller doesn't mean he's not a visual artist, and if what he digs is making stuff "go boom" and cool camera angles, dynamic shots, special FX and action... what's wrong with that?

Personally, I am *not* a screenwriter and while I enjoy telling a story and conveying emotion, I love trying to make stuff look cool - even if there is no substance. It's what I enjoy, and many people enjoy watching it just for fun. It's a legitimate "art" even if its not one with a lot of depth or soul.

good point. sometimes I like to see movies like that. sometimes I don't. Bay has great looking films with great looking action. and that is all I need sometimes. Sometimes.
Transformers 2 will be #1 on my list next summer. I am a Tranformers G1 fan and am really looking forward to that one. #2 will be Avatar (I think that comes out next year)
