GH4 Why crop into 2.39 and 1.85?

Possible, but definitely not desirable. I refuse to buy the Batman movies on Blu-ray because of the changing aspect. Thankfully, the DVDs are presented with the proper, unchanging aspect as seen in theaters.

If anything, a movie should only 'open up' horizontally, but never vertically.

The Dark Knight DVD I bought the day it came out changes aspect ratio.
But yes its distracting, although I have never seen the Hunger Games films I am aware that they have quite a fluid aspect ratio change in it:

Ironically most movies are mastered at 2k or 2.5k and upsacaled to 4k when they need a 4k distribution.

Any info on the process how its done to maintain maximum quality? Can the upscaling be done with Avid or Premiere the same way they do it with big budget films?

I've never understood the appeal of Batman (although I did enjoy the camp tv series) so I can't comment too much on the Batman movies having not seen them in the cinema (or even on tv other than in passing). I don't know if it will work as well on a smaller screen but in Interstellar it was very impressive and effective in the cinema. He disguised the changes through clever use of shadows and blackspace. It had happened several times before my filmmaker brain kicked in and alerted me to the fact it was happening at all. Space was big, inside the spaceship small. I would conversely argue it should never be done horizontally. But I will withdraw that opinion the moment I see it done effectively.

Oz the Great & Powerful. All the Kansas scenes were 4:3 to match the original film. The view opened up horizontally for Oz to match today's common cinema experience.

It worked beautifully.

The last movie by Xavier Dolan, Mommy, plays with aspect ratio a lot, going from square format (1:1) to wide (1.85), back and forth. Works pretty well.

As Nolan has demonstrated it is even possible to change aspect ratio within a movie to dramatic effect.

I completely agree with this, but Nolan didn't demonstrate that. His aspect ratio changes were not motivated. They were simply the difference between shooting stocks.
