Why can't batteries for gadgets last longer? Why?!

Charli

cool little "title"
I had to buy new batteries for my cellphone. Got two off Ebay. One died, still have the other but it doesn't last long.

My battery to our fax machine/cordless phone is dying. Won't last more than a couple of minutes of talk.

Seriously, I buy gadgets only to pay a lot for battery replacements!! What a racket! When are we going to have all our gadgets running on solar power so we don't have to hear the beep-beep-beep sound that you're about to lose connection.

Is that really to much to ask?

Well first I gotta ask.... how do you talk into a fax machine?

Then there's that whole Catch-22 thing about solar power not working at night........

Bubble.

Busted.

The cell phone battery thing is a racket, and the off-brand (ebay) replacements just aren't very good.

I had a cell battery crap out on me (5 minutes of talk time after a full charge) and went to the Verizon store. I was told that a new battery for my phone would be $50, but then he opened my account and told me I was eligible for an upgrade, and I could get a new phone for $50, and there's a $50 mail-in rebate, or a better phone for $100 with a $50 mail in rebate. "So, wait... a new battery is $50, but an entire new phone, with a new battery, is either $50 or 'free'?" Yeah, that makes sense.

These things are designed to fail. They want you to have to buy a new one, and sooner rather than later.

Pookie you're killing me!

It's a fax-cordless phone all in one, duh! Seriously, I do think batteries are meant to fail. Friend of mine just bought two new cordless phones and batteries went out after a year. Batteries cost like half the price of a phone.

Sounds a lot like the ink on printers - another racket!

I heard there's a room of people somewhere all testing how to make batteries last even less time in our electronics.
