Why are we not talking about The Raid: Redemption

As an AF100 film, I would love to discuss the way they shot this film. It was interesting to say the least. Did I miss the celebration of this film as a testament to the viability of the m4/3 format as a legitimate choice for feature film production especially in the action with visual effects genre?

It looks like they shot on fig rigs and captured/recorded to nano flash.

Seriously, did I miss this conversation?

That was shot on the AF100? Holy CRAP! I have been pumped for that movie. WHY AREN'T WE DISCUSSING THIS! You have any links or pics with them shooting on the af100?

I've heard really good things about "The Raid." And I really enjoyed their first film "Merantau." I had no idea it was shot on the AF100! Now I'm totally stoked to see it in my local theatre if it arrives! I assume they used an external recorder? What kind?

That was great!
I want to try that fig rig. Its been around for a long time and I nerve used it.

Erik, I used the fig rig a few years back. And it's really fun to shoot with. It's like holding a steering wheel. After using it, I was totally stokeed to buy one. But for some reason, I never did. I've always regretted it. I think I might just pick one up now!

Well, apparently to get away from the "super35, full-frame, or poo-poo" thinking of the DSLR-erati (Bloom/Maschwitz) you have to get outside the US.
This is great to see! Panasonic should bring the director & DP to NAB and screen the film- I think it would sell allot of AFs.

You caught everyone flat footed! Seriously though, I've been following the film, but I had no idea they were shooting on the AF100. It's been getting rave reviews as one of the slickest actions films out of asia today!

It just goes to show, that it's not all about pixel peeping. So many people are obsessed with pixel peeping that they forget how versatile and flexible the AF100 really is. When my clients are fretting about picking which camera to use, I ask them "What is the story your trying to tell?"

+1!!!!

I just got home from the movies; I saw The Raid: Redemption at Sundance Cinema in Houston, TX.

Wow.

I am, wow. That was a good one. First of all, the movie looked great! I was realistically stunned by the picture. Given the tests that have been put up, I expected it to look like a Teddy Ruxpin camera shot it, but it looked great even through the theater’s unfocused projector lens (even their logo was blurry). Great action, razor thin story (but it is part one of a planned trilogy so there’s that), everything a guy needs on a sunny Friday post work afternoon.

Now, the bad news, the picture was plagued with noise during the low light scenes (they shot one scenein complete and total darkness), and some noise in the blacks.

Now, the good news, nobody cared!

Not one single solitary person cared about the noise or artifacting or highlight handling or anything…you know how I know, I asked.

I hung around after the movie and polled the audience (every filmmaker should do that). I really did. It was hilarious. Me, a 300+ pound black man with crazy hair lurking in a dark corner, asking people about picture quality and overall movie going experience, priceless. Amazingly, everyone was forthcoming (two guys talked to me about Human Centipede) about what they though, and they thought that the movie was great, that the picture was great, and that they had a rocking good time watching bad guys get completely f%cked up…and that was it. No one complained. No one said, “the overall picture quality in the dark was riddled with artificating/noise and lead to a less than stellar movie going experience,” or “I saw moire and nearly threw up; if there was a cliff in the theater I would have jumped offof it, taint first, on to an alcohol soaked air hammer turned upsidedown.”

No moire, no worries about the rest.
Everyone loved the movie.

I loved the movie.

The AF did a marvelous job helping thefilmmakers bring the experience to life as a good tool should. I honestly got so embroiled in what was going on and the action that was unfolding in glorious, orchestral violence I didn’t care, either! Like I said before, the movie looked great.

I was proud to shoot AF; I was proud toown Panasonic; I was a Panasonic Fanboy, but after the movie was over.
If you want my honest, in depth analysis of the cinematography, the directing and the screenwriting then I can do that in another thread as a working professional and a filmmaker, but if you want to know what I, as a guy, though about the movie… it was f%cking awesome and I did not waste my money.
Now for all the pixel peepers outthere, I paid my money and saw THEIR movie in a theater that I droveto and was surrounded by other people who also paid their money (and you know what, they were yelling “fatality” and “KAY OH” and we all connected and laughed and became a community at that… one guy even said “finish him” right before a brutal kill- it was awesome), but I haven’t seen your film, though.

So, what are you waiting on? Because I have no trepidation about shooting AF or anything else anymore, I am going to work- pixel peeping be damned!

Well, main reason I haven't been talking about it is -- I've been living in a cave and hadn't even heard of it. But IMDB lists it as the #3 most-popular movie released in 2011, behind "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" and "We Bought A Zoo"! And with almost 4,000 voters having voted on it, it's got a rating of 8.4... that's huge. IMDB reports a million dollar budget, but only $235k gross at the theater in its first weekend, which sounds bad until you realize that that's only 14 screens nationwide! So that's a pretty decent haul, per screen.

I've been saying (basically) that since the AF100 was released, it's good enough, it's cheap enough, it's time, so ... go do it! Glad to hear your report and looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

Thanks Barry, really great to hear from you! I'm trying to contribute to the community more. I would have thought it was big news being that I learned about the first film, Merantau, from the HPX forum here. 200k from 14 screens is huge. Those aren't multiplex screens.

Also, here's a quote from an IMDB user-

This thing is bloody with a capital B, but it's so exceptionally well choreographed, photographed and edited that you never lose sight of the geography surrounding the combatants or feel like you've missed a single blow or puncture as each new pair (or group!) of fighters grinds each other down.[FONT=Verdana, Arial, sans-serif]

I’m going to see it on Sunday in San Diego. Its playing at AMC La Jolla at 10:30am. Perfect late morning movie. Have to support this movie since the AF-100 has served me so well. Thanks for bringing this to the community!
