why are threads closed?

We've tried it both ways and believe me--it's better this way. When we allowed political "discussion" (and I use that term loosely because it was mostly arguing and insults), people were at each other's throats and it spilled over into other forums. At this point we're trying to move away from non-film related discussion in general--even in the Cafe, so we can refocus the board on the craft of 24p digital filmmaking. We've tried to make our policies as clear as possible, so everyone's on the same page.

I'm not an overly political guy and I fit in really well with the politics of the majority of filmmakers I run into... but even I would sit in amazement at how DV.com would let a 50 page political rant run on.

Allowing political threads is bad social policy. Right now everybody seems to like everybody else on the boards and even though you can debate whether or not reading opposing views could be incendiary doesn't matter. People read these forums at 5:30am and 12midnight after a six-pack. Allowing highly volatile topics to hang around waiting for a match is just bad business.

The forums are ran damn near perfectly. When everyone agrees that this is the best forum on the internet I think the argument to make this place like the others is stupid.
YOU KNOW THAT'S JUST THE KIND OF THING A FASCIST ASS_HAT LIKE YOU WOULD SAY! YOU FRICKIN' LIBERAL NEO CON TREE HUGGIN' BIG BUSINESS CRONY!

That's why political threads are closed
It's a thin line but I think you could discuss how effectively a film makes a political argument, but it wouldn't be long before someone attacked the politics in the film.
You can certainly post a political film just like you can post a film with a booby in it (with explicit warning) but you can't post a picture of a booby for the sake of posting a picture of a booby. There is less censorhip when the controlled item is an integral part of your work and you want feedback on your work, rather than bringing up a topic for the sake of discussing it - at least this seems to be the case in my few months on here.

Another one lost to the closed thread heaven in the sky.

Is it that hard for people to self regulate themselves...

Its the wide world of the internet baby -- there's a lot of nutjobs out there

But, personally, I take Metamucil to help me self regulate -- you can tell tonight I missed a dose

Ive been doing Flaxseed; Ive been doing all kind sof Zone Diet stuff (including a glass of wine every night of course)

Ahh the mind of Jack... if you don't appreciate morphing Jarreds, prancing Richards, juxtaposing zombie headgrowths, and whatever the hell else I miss in other threads... you don't know Jack.

(the next contest should be comedy)

ha!

comedy is hard -- at least sustained, dependant on actors, non-cheap sight-gag/internet comedy

there will be many a hard entry to sit through on that fest my friend and mine is just as likely to be one of them as much as anybody elses :)

We need a themeless contest. Um...how about Best Special Effect?

Not even "films" as such. Just the effects, whether in-camera, practical, or post. Just something to make people go "How the heck was that done?"
