why are threads closed?

why would a thread just close for no reason? Threads don't get closed because they get heated do they? Because people form strong opinions right? Because I thought that's what these forums were for. Especially the film forums. I mean the admins don't even give you a reason. They just close it. ???

Anyway, just curious.

Threads are usually closed for reasons of politics, religion and/or porn related subjects. Or when people simply start acting like Ass_Hats or become beligerent and make personal attacks against others

Don't listen to John! Threads get closed only on Holidays and on Cambodian New Year.

There is nothing wrong with talking about a film that is political, but once you start debating the politics of the film, then that causes a problem. For example if you want to talk about the story arch of Primary Colors, there is no problem in that. You can talk about the character dynamics, cinematography, or lighting of that film. Once you start talking about it's tie in with a certain political figure and your opinion of that political figure then it becomes a problem.

You are right though, a lot of great films are political: Serpico, The Paralex View, Z, Born on the 4th of July, Saving Private Ryan, hell even Blade Runner. It is what aspect that you choose to discuss this film and the manner in which you discuss these films that determine whether the conversation is appropriate for this forum.

That is my understanding at least. Then again, sometimes threads get closed because they have been threatened and are relocated by Jarred's Thread Protection and Relocation Program. Once a thread is there, we may never hear from it again.

I'm not an overly political guy and I fit in really well with the politics of the majority of filmmakers I run into... but even I would sit in amazement at how DV.com would let a 50 page political rant run on.

Allowing political threads is bad social policy. Right now everybody seems to like everybody else on the boards and even though you can debate whether or not reading opposing views could be incendiary doesn't matter. People read these forums at 5:30am and 12midnight after a six-pack. Allowing highly volatile topics to hang around waiting for a match is just bad business.

The forums are ran damn near perfectly. When everyone agrees that this is the best forum on the internet I think the argument to make this place like the others is stupid.

I'm serious, Blade Runner presents an extremely bleak and dark view of the future... It falls within the realm of what can be called: a political vision.

With politics already clogging up every other aspect of life, why would anyone want to bring it here too?

Politics are a vacuous waste of everyone's time...
oh wait... was that political?

On a more serious note, I'm glad that this board concerns itself with filmmaking, film analysis, and overall creativity. As others have said, you can get the other crap almost anywhere else.
