Why accept paying for a bug fix (aka 1.11)?

It seems users in CAN & US are being asked to pay around $100 for the 1.11 firmware. (I hear in AUS and other countries it is free).

In the 1.11 firmware pdf it says the firmware fixes the following bug:

[Bug Correction]
1) The trouble is corrected that an error occurs when switchover of the media slots takes place during continuous recording with the i.LINK connected.

So couldn't you approach Sony services saying your camera errors when you switch over media when recording with i.LINK connected? You want it fixed under warranty.

The required fix REQUIRES firmware 1.11

Seriously guys, just do it yourself. On all the film forums I browse there's not one story of a user-done update that went wrong. Updated mine in about 10 minutes.

Here's a link to the firmware that will probably get removed by a mod - http://fohdeesha.com/data/other/not%20ex1%20firmware.zip

The zip was made publicly available by sony, whether it was on accident or not.

I would (and I have had the update for some time on my desktop), but I know I need to get a few other fix's done anyway (battery drain, letters wearing off etc) and I don't want to risk any stress if they question when it got 1.11.

If it comes back from them without 1.11 then I'd happily do it myself.

Thank you Fohdeesha!

Since there's bug fixes in this upgrade, how can Sony justify charging $100 for this.... unreal. I'm lost for words!

Its only free through unofficial channels in those countries, thats the problem. If you trash your own camera trying to upgrade it yourself your going to wear the recovery bill. If Sony service do it, it is on them.

Even if Sony provided the firmware officially, they would not cover a bricked camera due to an upgrade you performed. It is like this with all firmware upgradeable products. If you are dumb enough to unplug the camera in the middle of a firmware update, you probably deserve a brick anyway. If she read the instructions properly, your mom could probably do it. It's quite easy.

Hence why Sony should be providing the fix for free, not charging $100 for it.

From my reading there are enough PS3 killed with each firmware upgrade (which by the way is 10x easier than the EX1 process of connecting cables and running programs in set orders etc) to have some level of concern over flashing it yourself irrespective of the easy of the process.

If we knew there was a fail back firmware it wouldn't be a problem (like most motherboards have now).

well... Reading this thread had me kind of nervous about being charged for the upgrade, so I contacted Prime Support. I have to say, I couldn't be happier about the service.

I contacted them on the Friday afternoon. They dropped the box off for me on the Monday morning and picked up the camera later that afternoon. Seven days later, first thing Monday morning and the camera was back to me. They fixed the battery drain issue. Upgraded the firmware and did a "complete function check" which was "all to spec".

Camera is back now and working fine and didn't cost me a penny.

Im in Manchester in the UK and the camera was sent to Sony in South Wales for those who are interested.

From what I've read the European pricing included Premium Support which the US pricing did not (they have to purchase it as an extra). Hence the firmware is free in the UK (but there are reports elsewhere that this is only true up to the end of October and that after that you'll be charged for the upgrade!)

And if you've broken the plastic mic holder make sure you get it fixed before you try and get a free firmware upgrade. Official Sony Premium Support policy is not to accept the camera without the mic holder as this counts as being "physically damaged" and therefore not covered.
