Who's got 'em?

Okay, Kaku got one (Japan), Spin got one (U.S.), and we heard a few dealers got some that were picked up immediately. I would imagine most anyone that got one would be out playing with it rather than posting . . . but I gotta ask:

Anyone else have a production model in their hands, or been contacted and told their HVX-200 is in (or on the way)? Do we know how many any of our friendly (to DVXUser.com) dealers received yet?

(has not slept a wink since the 29th) :-)

While Mike does not own the camera, a dealer is allowing him to test it out. It is not clear if the camera is the final unit or not, but overall he give the camera a positive review.

Good article.

I did have some concern about the mosquito noise, but there was no mention where gain or detail was set.

Thanks Bob but I already made my decision to buy in July when I got on Rush's list at EVS. Probably wasn't clear (I seldom am) but I was trying to determine if any were delivered stateside, other than the one we know of in the Pacific Northwest.

It's been kinda quiet in regard to this subject (although I see a similar thread has been started), I just thought that with the holidays over, businesses being open and people getting back from vacation we'd hear something today.

Maybe nobody knows? I rather suspect Jan's responsibilities don't include the shipping department and, if Rush doesn't know anything then he doesn't know. Somebody does though and it wouldn't hurt my feelings to know how many are winging their way to authorized Panasonic dealers . . . I'm probably not the only wondering. And besides, it would lower my stress load. ;-)

Hi Dave, I just wanted to quote myself from another post, because I am really excited to have finally tested the production model, and I want to share this info with you. We got 3, 2 went in rentals like I promised, and our friend Jay was our #1 on this list so he is getting his shipped.

"Just got done my first test in the lobby with two other DVXuser members. I just... I just... wow...
We shot a full 10min. 41sec. on a 4GB card at 720P/24PN Native. The camera was super-responsive, everything in the menu happened quickly, and so did calling up the one large 10 minute clip. No delays.
There were absolutely no motion artifacts, no stuttering, no aberration, no stair stepping, no nothing. Just a clean beautiful super-accurate 24P image, even when we were whipping it in CU's, panning fast/slow/med, shooting a face against a lightsource, shooting small details on a face, people walking across the screen fast/med/slow. We did everything. It was beautiful.
We shot the whole thing on the P2, and then played it back on a 42" Panasonic plasma monitor. Anyone who passed the monitor was slobbering at the image...
The camera can process the difference between light/med/dark orange on a fluorescent orange sand bag.
It maintained detail on someone's face, even when there was a hot kicker light on them. The highlights were maintained... wowee. We noticed a bit of yellow fringe on bright fluor light sources, but it was tight, barely noticeable. The iris was wide open anyhow, and we weren't compensating for it.
There was a bit of noise in the dark areas, but it was soooo acceptable, and quite unnoticeable. A bit of grain makes the picture more organic anyhow.
When you fast forward and rewind, you see EVERY frame in the LCD and monitor... No more Mpeg2 stutter, seeing every 10th frame, or DV break up, or interlacing issues."

I agree with everything Rush has said. The tests we did were rudamentary at best, just a bunch of Chrismas morning playing but OMG the footage was beautiful. Extremely natural color rendition, and a very pleasing filmic feel. Soft subtle colors and every bit the camera I had hoped it would be (even more in fact). I've shot every modern camera from Panasonic and Sony and every format with the exception of Viper and 65mm and although I don't think the HVX compares to 35 or Vision2 S16, I can say that no other camera has gotten me school girl giddy like the HVX did. I know we keep saying that it is the image that counts, but it's really the whole package that got me so excited. For a camera to be so small, pleasantly heafty (not heavy, just a nice solid metal feel of a professional tool unlike the plastic consumer feel of the DVX) and inexpensive and create absolutely world class images is truely awsome. No artifacting, to chunking up on extreme motion, acceptable (even pleasant) noise. Really A+ all around.

I'm going back in tomorrow with my 17" Powerbook and some other hardware to do more tests in anticipation of my shoot next week. If anyone has anything specific they would like tested out and clips they would like to see (settings, scenarios, etc.) I'll do my best to shoot them as part of the tests.

More to come...

Thanks Rush and filmsox.

It sounds like the camera is going to be a decent tool.

filmsox,
Is it possible to shoot some low light stuff with detail at -5 (Barry's suggestion) and gain at 0?

I'm interested in how well the image holds quality and the noise floor.

Thanks, Steve

We've got ONE... and like 20+ units on backorder :-(

I drool everytime I walk by the box.

Hey Rush, I think you're getting a little full of yourself. You've taken to quoting yourself. What's next? refering to yourself in third person? like, "Rush likes the HVX, and when Rush likes something--that means you should buy it..."

Yes but it is enthusiasm like that which keeps the planet turning!!!

(Rush, overheard laughing manically in the background of this post)

<g>.

P.S. Thanks Lloyd, that little bit of news gives one hope.

Who the heck is this Rush person you speak of? That's not a real person, but a pigment, er, a figment of some phantasmic imagination.

I read that it is impolite to cross post into different threads with links, and it's better to copy the contents that apply instead. But maybe I got that the other way around. No one complained before.

Oh and, buy the HVX, buy the HVX, buy the HVX! (Listen to the sound of my voice)

I like HBO, Brian, you should go watch HBO. Have some pizza while you're at it. No anchovies.

That's the ironic part, Haakon. I got none to sell... but I gotta play along with Brian.
