Whoosh sound effect.

Hey,
I'm looking to either download or record a 'whoosh' sound effect. Basically I want to use it when the camera makes fast pans or tilts, or when an object moves past the camera quickly. I really like the similar sfx used in the movie "Hot Fuzz" if that helps give you an idea of what I'm looking for.
Thanks for ideas.

There are plenty of sound effects directories online. Some free, some not. Soundsnap.com is free. Pond5.com recently added sfx to their catalog, though it's pay-per-download.

If you want to record it yourself, just get a few different things to wave through the air. Different materials, sizes, widths, and densities will make all sorts of different swishes and swooshes. Look for wooden dowels, rebar, rails from a Lockermate shelf system, cricket paddles, etc. Be sure to get a variety of shapes... some round, some flat and narrow, some flat and wide, etc.

Don't forget the perennial favorite: cheese grater on a string! Many options as C2V said. Be sure to use wind protection when recording...

thanks for all of the tips! would you just call them "wooshes" or swooshes or something? or do they have a more specific name?

Woosh, swoosh, swish... they go by several names that are usually associated with the characteristic of each sound effect.

You can also use a software/hardware FM synth to model this effect.

Most of the HotFuzz stuff sounded very layered, as if many were recorded, mixed one on top of the other and processed.. sounding like organic and synthetic at the same time.
