As a part of an article I'm writing, I'm interested in knowing who uses a top cheesplate on their F3.

Thanks for your responses

Ned

It would be nice to know why people like me find it as not useful. I think that a cage is better for attaching heavy items and of course a handle that doesn't put the weight on the camera but the rails.
my 2¢

I use mine to mount a DP4-EVF, a outboard recorder and top mounted motor rods when flying the unit on a steadicam.

which steadicam do y use, or which one is recommended for F3+1,5 kg Lense+standard battery (no V-mount) + baseplate (0,5 kg) mini FF + Hyperdeck shuttle + small monitor + Berkey plate ?

I honestly love my Berkey top plate. For most of my work I'm lugging the camera around for 10 hours a day and I cant have anything mounted to the handle or to close to it as Im constantly taking it off the sticks and carrying it. I even put a cold shoe on the plate to keep the shotgun away from the handle. I'll use the Berkey to mount my EVF for handheld shooting with a rod and right angle pieces I cobbled together. Or with a Noga arm if I know Im going to be on sticks most of the day. Another Noga arm I use for mounting my Samurai nice and tucked in behind the camera. Just as important, as Timur mentioned in another thread his handle split from a heavy load mounted to the rear 1/4-20 on the handle.

Berkey plate is on top of my F3 for good...
so handy and solid. All the holes I need, and extra protection for the top of the camera... What else can you ask for?

Not fan of the cage as it brings the size and weight even more for already heavy set. My shoots are mostly with no AC, so I am the one lugging the camera... I am only getting older, not younger...

I'm not getting any younger either so I don't use either, but if I did I would use a cage to protect, mount zoom motors, etc. I mount my heavy Panasonic 8" monitor on the O'Connor O'Box matte box.

I recommend one from this company or one from TIFFEN. You should take a Steadicam course before you spend a cent on a rig. The two day workshops are affordable and will let you know if it is right for you. If you don't live in the US, phone TIFFEN up and ask when a course will be offerred up within reasonable flying distance to where you live.

One specific thing I will say is, trying to save money by not putting batteries at the bottom of the sled won't do you any good. Take the course and you will find out why.
