Who Sold The Most DSLR/ILC in 2010?

Not to highjack, but ...

I'm not familiar with the GH-series. Why isn't it considered a DSLR?

Technically its not a SLR (Single Lens Reflex), it doesnt have a Mirror. They are mirrorless and have an electronic viewfinder instead.

I think the GH is classified as EVIL.

Who cares?

It can be useful to know something about the structure of the industries whos products we use - independent of marketing hype and individual preferences. I have a GH2 and a 5D so I'm pretty brand agnostic. However the companies that sell the most are likely to have the most R&D dollars to spend on the future.

I think the GH's are included in these figures - ILC = Interchangable Lens Camera (i.e. mirrorless). Obviously DSLR/ILC's are only one sector out of several when it comes to HD Video capable cameras.

Obviously with Canon's track record of updating their video cameras, I highly doubt this will happen. They added video to their SLRs and it's a huge hit, does that mean R&D dollars go to their SLR lines or their video camera division? The fact that Panasonic and Sony already have full featured cameras with big sensor imaging tells you Canon is straggling as usual.

This article is more for financial than technical, it gives us, the operators, very little actual news. Sales figures for an industry mostly dependent on still photographers does very little for dvxusers, specially when the top company has a less than favorable reputation in updating their video cameras.

It sure seems to me that there must be a lot more still cameras sold than camcorders. Everybody you know has a camera. Maybe one in ten own a camcorder. At least among the people I know. I would think that most of their R&D money has always gone to cameras.

Well - I guess the technical part of the news is the impact mirrorless is having. In the Bloomberg News article that the blog post referenced in the first post of this thread they touch on this: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-...-to-canon-with-new-digital-camera-models.html . It would be interesting to see an analysis of the numbers of HD Video enabled still cameras.

The table for worldwide digital still camera shipments by vendor from IDC is interesting as well.
