who is buying AF100 for rental?

Actually, I agree with Timur completely... at least here in the Los Angeles area. The market is going to be saturated with these cameras, just like it is now with Red One, 7D, and 5Dmk2. You can get any of those pretty much for free these days just by hiring the owner on as crew because there's so many of them.

I'm going to use my equipment to get me more work, including it in my day-rate and not having the option to rent the equipment without me being there. If they don't want me to be the DP, that's fine, but I still have to be there as AC. Otherwise I have no interest or desire to rent it out. And there's a lot of people here working like that.

I remain very skeptical that the optimistic rates will hold; just too many cameras.

I'm in complete agreement on your decision to accompany your gear or keep it in the case! I've had equipment damaged by people I thought were a lot more responsible than they turned out to be.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

I do the same in Beirut, usually with whatver set I'm using. The money for a body alone is negligible, I do this with the tinies for students during finals time, but almost always have to include everything from a kit of glass to lights. It is, in its best forms, couch and beer money, I still push it I like it, but it won't make a living. At least here.

Even if I kit out with an awesome camera, I won't be hired for the cam alone. It always requires me to go out and shoot. I lump the whole thing into a day rate and pay whoever owns what i don't own that I take out.

I own a cam body, a few lenses, a friend owns a zeiss kit, another owns the lights. I do the shooting usually. So I get paid, and we cut it. It won't pay rent, or it'll pay ONLY rent.

Still trying to figure out how shooting can make money in Beirut.

That said, I would buy an AF100 to rent, but wouldn't price it to make money. That would be discouraging to my clients, they depend on me to hook them up if they have nothing. I do that caus eI want kdis here to shoot, but yeah it's beer money. My major dough has always come from post. Audio, cause I've been in it for years and years and years.

There's an advantage to people hiring your taste and skill on top of the gear, ie making it one package. If you make something cool, regularly, on your own, your price goes up. I have a long way to go of course, but I see it all the time here.
