F55: white paper for S-Gamut3.Cine/S-Log3 and S-Gamut3/S-Log3 white paper

Here are mapped values:

Checking out the white paper apparently slog3 gives 1.5 more dynamic range than slog2. Hm, and the curve looks quite identical to Arri's log-c.

Interesting.

I was not aware that slog3 would offer 1.5 more stops of DR until now. Is there a catch to that?

Alister said that while the gamma curve has 1.5 more stops, the camera itself is still limited to the same 14 stops of DR. That of itself raises another question however. If th Slog3 gamma curve is 1.5 more stops than the sensor can see, then is data space being consumed that can never be used?

The top of SLog2 (1024) is about +6.25 stops.

At 14 stops lower (-7.75), the SLog2 curve is virtually flat, so there can be little useful image at that point.

SLog3, from +7.75 to -6.25, is never that flat, so 14 stops is more likely possible.

Cheers.

From what I gather the one advantage of using slog3 is you will get more data available in the shadow area. In theory, this would give you more detail in the shadows and levels of data to play with for PUSHING in post. But honestly boosting levels of any shadows in post is going to get ugly, so not sure I would resort to using slog3 for the sake of more shadow data.

Nice! More range in the highlights is exactly what digital cameras need. I'll have to run some comparison tests on the two next time I shoot with one of the new Fs.
