White limbo - eharmony spoof

Greetings all,

Just did a little CC on some video and a web-compressed file. It's the actor standing around waiting on us to shoot. Humming a little ditty. We shot an eharmony spoof and it went off really well. I'll have something together by the following week, but just wanted to get some feedback on this. Really looks nice on the HD monitor through the DVI connection on the Dell 2405.... However, it couldn't handle the blown out highlights when we shot and would cut out when I approached 100 IREs.. so I was without a monitor which really sucked. Going to try and get a video monitor for the next shoot though...

All in all very happy with the cast of actors I have.. they are a fun bunch. Here's the test file... nothing too exciting but looks quite nice... and done for cheap too!

Shot 1080 24pa....

Thanks... we were so happy with the results. I followed a friends lead who discovered this paticular method on his feature project a few years ago. I"m going to try and figure out a method to do it for green screen in this manner.

I'll give info later.... Anyone else got any feedback? I know there's not any sketch stuff on this yet... but believe me, the performers were in high form that day and I had to leave the set a few times because I was ruining the takes with my cackles and snorts and laughter.

thanks all...

I know this is probably super obvious and I hope I don't insult you, but it looks like you could use a garbage matte to remove that yellow stuff in the corners. Even those new Apple adds do a terrible job of this at times (much worse than what I see here). Looks great, that last frame must be without CC, right?

Very nice.
Looks like you've been using joe's filters, but of course it can be done in the 3-way.

Like it.

Why do the yellow corners pop up - out of curiosity?

Duuude.. Looks sweet.. Funny as hell too! I love the Crescendo!!!

Nice job..

HOW? and AMAZING color correction.. HOW?

Greetings all.... This was a rush job and I didn't see the corners until I put it up.... I do have some CC to do to this to get it where I want and blow it all out.... As far as the method... It' s the sweetest thing ever.. and maybe I should keep it to myself or charge a day rate to come on out... LOl... Just kidding.

This method was actually something that my buddy T.J came up with when he was frustrated in front lighting to try and pull off the white limbo shoot from floor to ceiling... He had a big room to do, I guess. Then because he and I used to do a lot of convention A/V back in the day.. it occured to him to light it all from behind... So that's what he did and that's what I did on this.

I simply took my normal background stand and hung a 5 dollar paper/plastic translucent painters drop cloth from home depot. We then too 2 1000 watt work lights and spaced them out evenly and then blue out the painters drop cloth... Until the lights are on.. it looks really bad. You see the seems, the wrinkles.. the dirt and everything. And then when they are on, to the naked eye you just see hotspots and it looks like crap.. But low and behold on the monitor you get a 100 percent blown out white limbo look...

I'll take pictures tomorrrow night as I'm doing it again for a Jazz musician friend of mine and then I'm going to do it again next week... If people want more info then let me know.. I'll also take down the package info on the drop cloth and the work lights and all that. If people do decide to do this.. then in Honor of my friend, it should be called the TJ white limbo.. or some derivative of that.

Also.. the yellow corners pop out as they were the extremes of the drop cloth and they weren't as welll light and blow out.. That's the seems of the cloth.... For most of it.. they aren't present but I did have to dial the lighting in and out as we changed warddrobe and as each person came in.. This really pale actress gave me some especially difficult situations to deal with...

Also, aside from the 2k of worklights on the limbo... I used a 55watt Flo and a 650 fresnel bounced which was more than enough light... Also, since everything is rear exposure the actors aren't bombared by tons of light and it keeps everything really clean and neat.. BUT DAMN HOT!!!!....

I will post the spoof sketch next week. Got some really funny actors and I'm just having a good time. I also have learned so much from this site.. and have become friends with so many of you.. been inspired by so many of you.. and think of this site as a friendly home and resource that has made my HVX experience the best thing ever...

I would also like to know if anyone else has also had their Dell 2405 freak out because of exposure like this... That's also the problem that I got with the corners and some exposure as my monitor would cut off when it' got to hot.. . Really pissed me off. Anyone else have to deal with this?

I'm thinking even an SD TV might be a better solution next time. I do want to get the Marshall but that's an expensive thing right now.. Most of my cash is going into this show...

Going to have a productive week so if I'm not on much.. it'll be a bounty of footage that I'm getting to put up here next week...

Good luck and thnx for the tip.

The Dell is really no good for video monitoring, and you're right in the assumption that a cheapo CRT would probably would be a better way to monitor video signal.

Try to get the 17" Panny (from a friend - I'm a bit far away and use it every day...). It has a waveform monitor, that could come in handy for this shoot.

Good luck!

Gunleik.... I would love to get the panny. I might consider it if it were like 1500 instead. I'm close to buying this HD monitor from Walmart of all places as the image looks great and it's cheapo.

I also appreciate your advice and inspiratonal footage in 1080. I shot 1080 and I'm never going back to 720 when it comes to short run narrative. The footage looks a lot better than the 720... and swapping cards isn't that big of a deal with the p2store.

As far as being away. I would travel to Norway... would be sweet to visit and shoot some dark metal... Or somet snowy winters... or Fjords (sp) if I'm not mixing up my countries. Would also be nice to pop over to Iceland as well and hang out with Bjork...
