FEATURE: "WHITE KNUCKLES" – a film by SABI

on the sound shrine is a dim, well shaded lamp
a bottle of fresh spring water
a bottle of beverage on a post-it for a coaster

the creative candle, alight from sparks flying round the room,
squares from the wooden sound absorbers
soaking in the sonic landscape
being created

dare I say
drinking sounds of white knuckles
(remembering its days
as a tree)

right now zach is working on the opening sequence of the film - william's introduction...

he's polishing the music over this sequence, which consists of a shot that travels across Julie's dining room, living room, into a darkened bedroom, and then back around again, finally ending in the kitchen.

it's continuous as far as sound goes, and a lesser mixer would play with volumes to indicate spatial changes, but Zach seems to be playing with the types of sound waves that would really be in those spaces - further drawing us into these characters right from the beginning.

our perspective, our POV, and our story's space/world is clearly defined and delineated... and through Sound!

going to listen for a bit now instead of typing

p.s. on top of this... the music is emanating from an old style record player - so there is the added necessity of a warm analog-esque phonic sound as the spaces change...

Zak Forsman will be showing up for the session today

We're working on Real 2 -

Zach Sievers is mumbling "what in tarnation" and "what is in sam hell?" to himself as he puts an effect on the last beat of the sound of a record that we cut away from as it is playing. He's trying to make it sound like we've been cut off from hearing the music - a distant echo...

I think saying those things in a Yosemite Sam accept helps him as he works.

Who am I to question Genius?

*because of scheduling conflicts with our finishing schedule, unfortunately, we won't be able to make it to Ron Austin's discussion on his new book "In a New Light" - but we send Ron and the gang our best wishes today & will join in the near future! The book is a must read and is available off the Blue in Green website: www.blue-in-green.com

What we're Mixing On: - @ SNAP SOUND

What we're Mixing On: - @ SNAP SOUND

Zach is sitting at a Control 24 and we’re using a Pro-Tools HD2.

We’re listening to the film on JBL monitors

in a mixing studio surrounded by Sheetrock, Sound absorbent fixtures, carpeting – feels like we’re in a BUNKER.

It's true, we're back at it. This time, we're very serious.

Very serious.

No lighting of the creative candle, no nothing. Just hard mixing. Here's us, seriously:

We talked about schedule, we talked about sound, we talked about cinema.

Now we begin the final mix of Reels 1-3.

(there was one non-serious moment when this loud, strange, mumbling/whispering effect started playing randomly while we were working with suburban interior house ambience - at first we laughed, then we considered it for another place in the film, binned it and got back to being very serious about sound.

Film Comment Cards

Film Comment Cards

We've recently employed the usage of Comment Cards (and golf pencils) for our upcoming screenings of White Knuckles. I hope that we institute the same in future screenings of our upcoming released. I've discovered they're incredibly helpful - even though they are very simple.

Most Comment cards contain information for Studios to gauge how viable a project is. They pay particularly close attention to the "Would you Recommend this film to a friend" question. We hope that the comment cards can do more than get a sense of overall feelings about the film, but also get to some details about the audience's internal experience. We've created a simple one that evoked terrific participation and great responses after a White Knuckles private preview screening.

I share it with you here and hope you find it helpful as you submit your films to festivals or have your own screenings - It would be great to integrate this into a website someday, that accompanies a film.

Feel free to add your own and let me know other ideas (we only get one chance after a screening to pick their brains)...
