white balance...

Re: white balance...

If I wanted a blue effect, I would use a filter or do it in post. There's no telling what color temperature it would look like from shot to shot w/o white balancing.

Re: white balance...

Also, I have noticed that when you don't WB (or WB towards blue) footage is more susceptible to noise when you shoot dark reds and yellows... any experts here know the science behind this?

Re: white balance...

Image get's noiser when white balance is towards the 5600K end.
What I generally do is use the 3200K preset and a 85B filter.
Blue channel is always the noisiest when dealing with video.

Re: white balance...

The spectral sensitivity curve of CCD imagers shows significantly lower QE for the bleu spectrum part. So more gain is needed (=more noise) to get a balanced white (and colors). A 3200K reduces the noisy blue gain and makes the noise less visible.

Re: white balance...

Also, there seems to be a lot of noise in the blue channel of any image that undergoes compression. Take a look at a digicam blue channel in a raw or tiff file and then the same channel after a "maximum quality" JPEG compression...it's noise city!

Re: white balance...

Indeed, transform based compression (DCT,..) as used in JPEG accentuates noise visibility in a non linear way.
