White balance

I have been having an issue with white balance. When shooting indoors I can not get a decent white balance other than with the Pre-set wb. Whenever I try to white balance/black balance using either the A or B under 3.2k I get a greenish/yellow image when I balance under my Kino Diva lite's. It is not the monitor as it looks the same On all my external monitors as well, besides as I said the Pre-set usually looks great, so that is what I end up using. I also already did the firmware update which fixed the tint of the LCD.

Now when I white balance under the 5.6k setting in daylight I seem to get a good white balance using the A or B setting. Any suggestions.?

That is one seriously brilliant little gadget. (The light trap is genius)

I would love to have one and can see a multiple of other uses for it (but not actually for WB and not on a slate)

Where do they come from?

I'm using Kino Flo True Match 21 " 55C-K32 Compact Lamp - 55W/3200K in the Diva's. So they should white balance using the 3.2k setting, I would assume.

I find the tungsten bulbs in the diva to be a little funny too. Definitely don't read 3200 (although I don't have a WB meter), but on my EX-1 they typically display around 2900. And yes, on the AF-100 when I've WBed of a card with those lights I get a sort of odd look and ended up eyeballing it with the VAR temp, then adjusting a little in post. I think the Kinos (at least the Divas) have more magenta in them. I really use my Diva less and less and prefer hot lights.

It is a strange thing seeing as when I shoot using the 3.2k pre-set the color looks pretty good, but when I try to white balance manually the colors are off. I also have noticed that when someone is wearing purple it looks blue on ALL the monitors. All the other colors and skin tones look fine, just the purple turns blue. But when I bring the video into the FCP it is purple, not blue.

I've definitely noticed on my EX-1 that the LCD displayed purple as blue.

Fluoro tubes generally have a green spike. It is possible (I dont have literature in front of me) that Kino uses a magenta to counter this. Thus a manual white balance in turn may see this magenta on the overall colour and add green back in - whilst a preset 3200k balance sees it naturally. This is supported in reverse on osram tubes, whereby the green spike exists so if you use a preset 3200k balance it still sees the green and the image has a greenish tinge - however if you manually white balance, the camera "sees it" and corrects for it.

I've had some weird white balance issues too. Can Barry comment on how to do a proper white balance with the AF100?
