White Balance Questions

The First few days I was using the camera, when setting the WB, I seemed to have left the AWB button pressed a little too long. As a result, I kept getting a message indicating I had set the Black Balance ( ABB ). Do I need to worry about this. Should I go back and reset my Black Balance?

Also, when manually setting White Balance, does it matter what type of white surface you utilize to perform the balance?
In other words will a shiny/reflective surface work? Is there a standard card/board of some type that folks use to perform this simple yet critical task ( besides one you have to pay $50 for )?

Many Thanks

Re: White Balance Questions

The white cards are great, but in bright sunlight a gray card works best. Not sure but I think they are 18% gray ?

Re: White Balance Questions

I would suggest that you should once again Balck balance your camera, with the lens cap on. This is important because on the last occasion the camera proboably set the balck balance in bright light, as you have described.

If you want to get right for your WB, you can try this:

this link was provided by this site a while ago. Never have a chance to try :'(

As for myself, sometime during a family function, when i don't have a white card with me, I just pick a white t-shirt or white celling for WB value, it works OK. It is the easiest and the fastest way.

Re: White Balance Questions

Do not white balance off a grey card

It is not a Grey Balance or it would be called that.

The white sets the color temp to the maximum voltage the sensors accept and "know" as white.
