White Balance Problem

For some time now I have been experiencing a white balance problem with my HMC150. When performing white balance in daylight, the image become unacceptably warm, with an orange cast. The preset 5600K white balance is much better. Redoing the white balance produces the same results. The problem may not be specific to the HMC 150: recently I did a side-by-side test of my HMC150 and a new (of course) AF-100, and the new camera showed the exact same problem. We looked at the footage from both cameras on a 50" Panasonic HD television, and a 17" Panasonic HD professional monitor - while somewhat different, they were consistent in the problem as described. Any thoughts or solutions appreciated.

I had this problem as well gpp. I was at a shoot last week and was using 5600k flo's and was trying to white balance but it was going completely warm, everything on the lcd was orange. I turned the flo's off and turned on the Arri's and when I white balanced to those everything went blue. I gelled the Arri's to daylight and when I white balanced it went to orange. I did not have time to mess around with it so I used the flo's which are 5600k kino's and used the 5600k preset and did the white balance during post. I have no idea what happened or why it seemed like it was in reverse but hopefully someone could shine in on the subject just in case this happens to us again and are in a spot where we do not have all our equipment with us to help us out.

So push for white balance, hold in for black balance?

Convenient.
Correct!

I had also read somewhere that you should black balance again if you make changes to the scene file or if you switch to playback to review clips.
I do, it's quick & easy.

Gpp i had the same problem with my 152 The Aussie Version, as i do weddings and social functions it has been a night mare to use and i have tried every thing to find a setting to sort it, to no avail.

But ... get your self a CBL lens this is a high tech grey card, get the 110mm one using this in manual settings has made my life and made the camera ever so enjoyable to use, also i recently updated the firm ware to 1.21 and it seem to make a vast improvement on the white balance when running in auto mode, i shot christmas day at a friends place as test totally on auto absolute no white balance problems all the footage came out great, admittedly i still need to get it to earn my trust in the area of white balance.

Hope fully its good bye to FCP colour correction

Cheers

James

Did you black balance as well?

Yes, every time.

I got this note from the friend who was having the same problem with his AF-100:

"Not sure about the HMC150 but I discovered a fix on the AF100 in the scene file setting menu . Color temp of custom wb settings (A,B) may be adjusted up or down incrementally. I tweaked A channel wb setting to +2 to match the daylight Preset. Voila! I left the B channel setting at 0 and it was too warm, orange.
I forgot that this feature is also on my HPX500, not sure about the HVX200.
A new feature on the AF100 has been added to the WB Preset switch - in addition to the default Tungsten, Daylight settings , there is a new VAR setting which allows you to adjust your presets up/down 200 degrees at a time. Nice."

So I'll check my HMC150 for similar controls. Anyone know if they're there?

Thanks.

Yes, the color temp is there, and yes it can make your WB look very orange or very blue. Set it to zero for neutral tones.

I have a HMC151 and I have the same problem, especially in interior shots of the white balance tends to blue. It might be useful to the white balance card?
