White balance oddity

Hi all -

What a weekend.... Too much work, not enough play :'(

I did a family favor on Saturday and filmed the wedding ceremony of a cousin of mine. As they walked out of the church I could not for the life of me white balance my camera properly. I tried numerous times to white balace against white poster board and each time it was way off. Most noticable were purples lthat ooked blue. Finally I set my white balance against the concrete and things looked better. Any thoughts as to why it was so far off doing a manual WB?

The weather was clear with a high sun.

Re: White balance oddity

If your purples looked blue than for some reason, the red chip was not producing enough output. This could happen if the reference surface you balanced against was reddish or if your chroma phase was not set correctly. Is this a consistent problen you're having? If so, it could be an improperly set chroma phase or a calibration problem. Is it possible that you balanced without any ND in place and the poster board was grossly overexposed? Maybe the red chip was overloaded--just guessing here.

Re: White balance oddity

Did you check the view finder when you were white balancing?
If it's to bright or to dark, The camera will display NG as in "no good"
But you probaly already knew that. ::)

Re: White balance oddity

Thanks guys for the replies. I think Barry may have hit it right on the head. Being in bright sun i'm betting the posterboard was way over exposed. This was the only time that this has happened. Last night I shot three interviews and I had no problem with the WB.

Barry - u did mention calibration.... I am not familiar with calibrating the DVX. Is this something that should be done? if so how often and how do I do it?

THanks again.

Re: White balance oddity

Dave,

It looks like you've identified the problem. Calibration should only be done by an authorized service center. If you had a *consistent* problem-like a green tint after every white balance, then it might be a calibration issue, but that doesn't seem to apply in your case.

I had the same problem. I was taping a graduation that had silky purple gowns under arena lights. The are just blue. Couldnt get them to be purple for the life of me.
Everything else, even the purple chairs, came out perfect. just the shiny gowns and flowers came out blue.
Had the same problem last year with my VX2000. had to correct in post.
Whats interesting is my TRV80 single chip camera had the colors fine. Its just with the 3 ccd cams.
Not sure if a filter would fix it.
Whats nice is that the school is going to get me a gown so I can figure out what I need to do to fix it, plus to know what to color correct to.
