White Balance Noise

I am having issues white balancing, I am trying to white balance to 1/2 CTO to get more of a blue look but whenever I do this I get lots of digital noise on anything that does not have light on it. Does this need to be fixed with more fill or am I doing something wrong or am I pushing the whitebalance too far?

Re: White Balance Noise

I haven’t had the chance to check this out with the DVX but in the world of HD (and most video as I know it) white balance works as follows:

The video signal is made up of red green and blue. Green is strongest and carries sync. When you do a white balance the red and blue signals are brought in line with the green signal. This can be seen on a waveform monitor that shows all three signals, separately but on the same screen. This is called a parade.

If your red or blue is to far off from the green gain may be needed to compensate. This might be the reason for the noise.

Changing overall color digitally only works so far, at some point it makes more sense to use a filter on the camera or gels on your lights.
