White Balance: internal vs. O7Q---Mitch?

Mitch,
You've alluded, in the past, to WB correction errors in the O7Q. Did I get that right?

When I point the FS700 at an 18% grey target, with the PP set to SLog2; and do an auto WB, I get a neutral color on the FS700 LCD. However, the color displayed on the O7Q, when set to monitor 2K, displays as very reddish/warm. I can use the RGB parade to set camera WB so that the O7Q displays a neutral gray, but then the on camera LCD is very reddish/warm. What's causing this discrepancy? Is this an artifact of SLog2? I can't seem to get both displays to agree on the WB.

Wouldn't you need to remove red/add blue to correct the O7Q to "neutral"? Wouldn't that make the FS700's LCD more blue/cool?

There is an issue of which we are aware. A firmware patch is coming soon. If you are experiencing significant issues please reach out to me privately.

If the issue were only on the display, I would agree Josh, but, unfortunately the issue extends to what is recorded. I would, most certainly Josh, be loath to think that manufacturers of 3rd party recorders that record SLog2, bury a multitude of sins knowing that all SLog2 files need to be "de-slog2'ed", so why keep faithfully executed algorithms.

I'm also experiencing this behavior. A nice neutral white balance on the sony lcd and an overly warm one on the 7Q. It's pretty unnerving and feels like its a weird warm wash over the entire monitor. Even the text and menus are looking yellow (or I'm going crazy.) It's very strange how upping the kelvin on the fs700 starts to make the 7q look cooler!

Can't wait for this firmware update.

Just received a 7Q myself and am experiencing the same/similar issue - proper white balance on the FS700 LCD display results in a noticeably warm/reddish (and maybe very slightly greenish) image on the 7Q -- whereas my AC7 and Kinotehnik LCDVFe show an image much closer (but not quite exactly the same) as the FS700 display. As Kyron said, the menus themselves seem to not quite be pure white too (but maybe now I'm biased...)

Also, possibly related, I'm also getting a black, rapidly flickering horizontal line on the 7Q across the display (maybe 20% up from the bottom) -- anybody experience this? It shows up on BNC and HDMI connections (tried a few different cables), and even shows up when I playback the recorded image on the 7Q itself (doesn't appear on the AC7 or Kinotehnik). Doesn't show up on the DPX files once dumped to a Mac or PC though, so it doesn't seem to be recorded.

I've received my unit in December and probably I have your same issue. It's not a cable problem (99%) but try with others. In my unit the black line was present also with the beginning bars without any connection.

Andy from CD let me know is only a screen issue and it want be present in recording. I send my unit to repair anyway, but I dont recommend to do the same: I sent it at beginning of january and probably I will not receive it back before march.
I've complained but I did not receive any reply, so if it's not to annoying for you I suggest to keep it with the issue.
Cheers
P.

Good to hear a fix is on the way, Mitch! Is the WB/red cast a known quirk? Kinda sucks I can't use the 7Q as my main monitor yet, as colors are way too off from what the onboard H264 actually looks like. The cast also seems a little worse on the SDI input, versus the HDMI.

Thanks for the image, Paolo, my unit is exhibiting exactly the same behavior, just with the black line on the bottom part of the screen, instead of the top.

Hmm, one concern, reading over the firmware release that pegs the white balance issue to FS700 RAW -- I also see the reddish cast/warmness over the HDMI feed, in addition to the BNC connector (RAW and standard video - though it appears a bit more exaggerated over BNC in general), and on the main display with no feed from the FS700 at all (ex: the white on the boot up screen looks a bit yellow/warm) and the display text (like OLED, GUIDE, etc) seems to have a yellowish/warm cast (ex: next to a white balance card, the text is definitely yellower/warmer) -- but maybe the text isn't supposed to be pure white?

Here's hoping the firmware fixes the warm cast overall! (FWIW, even though I still need to use my AC7/Kinotehnik as my main display for now, the RAW recording seems to work totally fine and breaking that 8 second limit is so incredibly useful, so I'm willing to wait and see what the firmware brings -- don't want to end up without a 7Q for awhile after that initial wait!)
