GH5 Which speedbooster?

I'm probably going to pick up a gh5. My lenses are Sigma 18-35 and Canon 70-200 2.8 ii.

I have NOT stayed up to date on which version was the best option. I know I could just RTFM - please don't crucify me!

Which speedbooster is most appropriate? All help is much appreciated.

ULTRA for APS-C lenses and full frame.

XL for full frame lenses. If you try to use APS-C lenses with the XL you will get vignetting.

I opted for ULTRA because I have and use both APS-C and full frame.

Huh? The Ultra is the safest choice for both full frame and aps-c. I use it exclusively with full frame lenses, including very wide lenses, and don't suffer vignetting.

I have the XL....most of my legacy lenses are full frame but I do own the Sigma 18-35, the 11-16 and 28-70 Tokens in aps-c...in 16x9 aspect ratio zero vignetting on those lenses, even handheld, but I don't move cameras much....depends on what you're shooting and turn around time. I personally value the extra 1/3 stop faster and the wider FOV...the Tokina 11 comes in at around 7.4mm at I think around F1.7 off the cuff. It's worth my while if I get a bit of vignetting to crop it out in post, but that's for my needs.

Thanks for the advice.

Can you put the canon 70-200 2.8 ii on the ultra without support?

I wouldn't.
You run into the same exact problem heavy lenses pose to the main body mount itself. But now you have two sag points.
The safest way to deal with this is to use the Speedbooster's mount or the camera's, but then add rails and make sure to use a lens support up front under the lens.

On the flip, I feel like I've seen plenty of people run the 70-200 via a booster on the GHx series... it's prrooobbbaaably ok if you aren't whipping it around. Especially with the positive lock speedbooster with support on it. But then, I tend to worry about those things and would prefer to play it safer and would likely opt for lens support. Or just use the small 70-200 f/4 L lens which is substantially lighter.

Re: speedbooster, ultra .71x. The XL has made due to the GH4's extra crop-in on 4K. You can swing it still on many lenses, but the slight FOV and lowlight increase you get isn't worth it to most people for the exchange in risk regarding lower lens comparability. .71x is generally recommended.

What about mounting the lens on a tripod with everything else hanging off the back? Just like the canon 5d mark ii days!

I do that when I'm not using my cage with monitor mounted on top. Once I add that much weight to the camera side, I prefer to have the camera/cage on plate, add rails, and use a lens support. Just way too much weight on a m43 camera mount.
