Which rain cover looks better for HVX?

haven't seen either in person, but i love my kata bag, and would guess they make a really nice rain cover.

I wouldn't worry about looks. Anyone that you'd want to impress won't be out in the rain or blowing sand to see it anyway.

Go for the one that offers the most protection with the greatest access to the controls.
If it's a major pain to adjust the controls how likely are you to use it?

I have a Portabrace rain slicker for the HVX that I like really well.

Maybe he wants to take it out for a fancy night on the town? You know, show the new girlfriend off to the ex?

You got it right. Naw I meant interms of functions, which one would be more suitable.

Here are some pictures of the Petrol PRC-PA-DVX-N rain cover with my HVX200:

Petrol1.jpg

Picture 1: The storage bag for the rain cover in relation to the camera.

Petrol2.jpg

Picture 2: The front of the camera with the rain cover snug around the stock lens hood, and the microphone cover just flopping on the side. The top front edge of the rain cover has a velcro strip to allow a semi-rigid ABS shade to be attached.

Petrol3.jpg

Picture 3: THe left side with the large clear vinyl window. There is a zipper where you see the orange pull cord that allows the window for the fold-out LCD to be closed up.

Petrol4.jpg

Picture 4: The LCD window opened up. There is plenty of slack to allow the LCD to be rotated and flipped. The bottom of the window has velcro to allow access to the LCD and camera controls on the left if desired. Alternatively you can get to the controls from the zippered bottom of the rain cover, which is left open in this picture. The zipper on the bottom has three continuous sections so that you can decide where you want openings for access and handheld or tripod use.

Petrol5.jpg

Picture 5: The right side with another large window, zippered to allow access if desired. You can see that the section that covers the EVF fits snuggly around the rubber piece, pulled tight by a piece of elastic sewn into the rain cover.

Petrol6.jpg

Picture 6: The left side with the optional hood attached and the bottom zippered up for handheld use.

Petrol7.jpg

Figure 7: The right side. The bottom looks lose here, but the zipper has actually been closed tightly around my wrist and the camera is very well protected.

That plastic looks like it would be hard to see the screen at times, with the ripples and reflections. Does it?

It's clear vinyl, so it is glossy. If you have bright lights shining on it and you don't flatten it, then yes, I suppose that could be an issue.

If you are outside in the rain or mist, it won't be an issue. If you are filming in sunny conditions, you might be better off using the EVF.

Thanks alot man. That's exactly what I was looking for. Great review. I loved it.

THoff always does a good job doesn't he.
I looked at both the KATA and Petrol at NAB. I bought the Petrol. Not only did it look like it was made for the HVX as opposed to the KATA which looked more "generic", but the plastic on the petrol felt like it was more plyable and would stay that way longer.
I do think either would be better than neither!

I've got the KATA cover. It works very well and the controls are very accesible plus there is a lot more clear plastic which means the the camera is more visible. I've never used the petrol cover so I can't knock it at all but I did look at the pics and the visibility was the main difference that struck me. Ted, you are quite right, the KATA needs to be stored properly or the plastic will crack. Mine has already started so I imagine that it might not be long for this world.
