Which raid controller I should chose for Avid?

Hi everyone,

I want to know, I'm planing to build a NLE computer and I want to know if Avid have issues about Raid controller? I know with a machine with a Matrox RTX100 with Premiere, they are very specific about the controller compatibility.

About the computer I plan to build, there is the hardware I want to purchase :

- AMD Athlon 64 Dual Core 3800+ 512k of cache
- 2 gigs of DDR 400 TWIN-X Cas 2 from Corsair
- ASUS A8N-SLI Premium (chipset Nforce 4) (with two Raid controller, one from Nvidia and the second is a Silicon Image)
- Antec P160 enclosure
- Enermax 600watts PSU
- 2 x WD1600JS (Western Digital 160 gigs) SATA 2 (for software)
- 2 x WD2500KS (Western Digital 250 gigs) SATA 2 16 megs of cache (for editing)
- PNY (or ELSA) Quadra FX1300 (Pci-X)

About the raid, I plan to set a "stripping" array (Raid 0)

What you point of view about that configuration?

You should stick to Intel for Avid. There's rumors of AMD certification down the road, but for now it's not worth the headache (in my opinion). Also, Avid doesn't support Dual Core yet, so you'll be spending extra money for no advantage. You might look at a Dual Xeon configuration. Not sure if it's in the budget, but those seem to be the best for Avid.

Regarding RAID controller, I'm using an Intel based controller that's built-in to my mobo with no problems. I've heard of people having problems with Promise PCI RAID controllers, but to the best of my knowledge, anything else should work. You might search on the Xpress Pro forums at www.avid.com for RAID and see what you get.

My two cents.

Thank you krestofre your your comments. I really prefer AMD to Intel because the Pentirum IV processor on the socket 775 heats too much, but the Xeon, I could be nice. I will check a look at my work to build a Xeon based system.

Thanks again!

Did you build that computer? How did it go?
