Hi guys,

i have a dilemma, i have the option to buy the Canon XHA1 used for a very low price (1800) from someone + case now my budget is around 2500 so i can buy a nice tripod, bag, filter and microphone but no lenses/light/ etc or i can created this kit on B&H to buy the Canon HV 40 since im from Pal land but currently live in the US. for the same price i can buy

Canon HV40
Bescor Light
Filters
Bag
Rod System
Step Up rings
Xlr converter
10 mini dv tapes
Shoe mount adapters
Raynox 7000 58mm wide angle lens
Raynox 7700 43mm HD 3times telephoto lens
Raynox 6600 43 wide angle lens
Bescor Tripod
Beachtek 4pins XLR adapter

all for 2400usd

now i know the differences in quality etc and the possibilities and limitations of both camcorders as a senior at university i will be shooting my documentary and will need a camcorder for a long time also im thinking to upgrade to PAL so i can switch back for 500usd but that would mean that i wont have money and i really need to film in PAL here in the US because i will edit in the UK eventually....

so please share your opinion !!! Canon XH A1 or Canon HV 40 i think i created a nice package for the price

Have you considered getting the XH-A1 as well as alotting some of that extra coin to perhaps investing in an HV20/30 as a nice B-cam? They make great location cams as well b/c of their ability to record a great image with fantastic portability.

Just a suggestion.

sniper has a very good point. I did that very thing and i am extremely glad I did. the hv20 works as a great bcam and a great deck to use for capturing. i try to put as little use as possible on my main camera.

doncarter, what will you be shootin mostly? a lot of doc stuff will not need lights. The interviews are the main thing in lighting concerns. for this i would suggest the lowel tota's i just recently purchased 2 off of ebay for $80

you can normally get some good deals. strap an unbrella on those and it gives great lighting. many others would also suggest the cheap china lantern route.
