Which one is better?

What do you mean by "better"?

If by better, you mean, which camera produces more "film like" images; this would be addressed through a series of tests which Jarred and Barry will be conducting. That's the best way to tell; especially if the tests are done through a double-blind scenario, so that there is no bias to affect the results (and hopefully the test footage will be online this time, so that we can make our own decisions as well). I'm not sure which is better, based simply on what is written on paper. Why not throw the XL-H1 in there also?

These are the two cameras I've been considering as well. I've ruled out Sony because of the lack of true progressive scanning, and I've ruled out Canon mainly because of the higher cost. Both also lost a notch because they don't support 720p, which is a format I'd like to work with.

Ultimately, deciding between the HVX200 and HD100U comes to a number of choices. Which are more important to you?

  • Interchangeable lenses?
  • Shoulder mount form factor?
  • True mechanical manual focus?
  • Longer recording with less hassle?
Go with the HD100U

or

  • A variety of frame rates?
  • Higher quality stock lens?
  • Built-in single frame recording and intervalometer?
  • Recording in 1080i as well as 720p?
  • 4:2:2 Colour sampling for better blue/green screen?
  • Intraframe compression rather than GOP?
Go with the HVX200

Both cameras have their positive aspects. It depends on which ones are right for you. I've found personally that the HVX200 has more advantages for what I want to do, therefore that's the one that's "better" for me.

Do you have a NLE system set up already? Just so you know, FCP doesn't support 720p (24). So, if that's what you have then I would go with the HVX.

the hvx is better. the people on this forum just want to confuse you with their technicali jibber jabber. run. take your answer and run.

Hello,

I don't want to sound blunt, but I am rather not in the mood to write a two paragraph question. So, in short:

Is the HVX200 better or is the JVC HD100U better?
The question is, which one is better FOR YOU.

I recommend making a list of features you'd like, independent of any camera and then go and get some hands on. To me the question is, which one fit's better into the current workflow. All the new camera's are able to create stunning images.

best of luck,

It's better for you. Nobody's trying to confuse, just pointing to the differences between these excelent cameras. I prefer the HD100, it's the one more suitable for my needs. I prefer shoulder cameras with manual lens, the HVX200 has better specs however it's an heavy handycam. It's important to show to some of my clients a professional camera, when they see a camera that doesn't look pro like an HVX or DVX they doubt of my professionalism and the camera's quality. Besides that, I can't be limited to 20 minutes recording time on a very expensive media. The HD100 may not be the better one, but it is better for me.

The HD100 does true 24P also, indeed, and it is the optimum encoding for the MPEG. I'm from Europe and use my HD101E mostly in 25P. Haven't seen a motion or compression artifact yet that is worse enough to notice...

Since filmmaking is what you're after the HD100 might be a good choice for you: you can use true follow focus and you can take your time to set-up the shots... (also: mini35? ...if that's in your budget...)

There are way way way too many bugs to work out with the hd100. In the long run, panasonic makes a far superior product. No matter. Either camera will not be the last camera you purchase. But from a consumer stand point. I would opt for a panasonic after a long arduous disapointing experience with a number of JVC cameras. Panasonic is not a perfect company either, however. I Don't read the same degree of critical feedback as I do with the hd100. In the end though, you won't have to justify your purchase if you wait and see how the panasonic works out. So far however, I think it's a safe bet.

Most likely the HVX is better for me personally, because what I am looking for is that "film" quality... with HVX being able to do 24P.

I heard that the JVC can also do 24P, though... not sure if it's as good, however, since Panasonic is already familiar with it from the DVX.

I cancelled out Sony and Canon because I heard that both of these has a video quality in its images, and that's not what I am looking for.

I shot a doc a few weeks ago with 2 cams, mine HD101 and a DVX100a using the match settings Tim Dashwood posted. We used DV mode 25P and the JVC didn't look less filmic then the Panny, on the contrary, it's image was far supperior in definition and the colors were better for my taste. The HD100 is known for it's film look, as the HVX will also certainly be... Try downloading some footage from the JVC, there is a video clip posted in this forum that shows very well how this camera can perform.

My conclusions from the clips I have seen so far:

The best in resolution:
1. Canon XL H1
2. Panasonic AG-HVX200
3. JVC GY-HD100

The best in filmlook:
1. JVC
2. Panasonic
3. Canon

What do you mean?

I need to see a side-by-side on the same scenario before making conclusions like those.

I've seen enough footage from all of them, on proper displays, to reach the same conclusion. At least on the resolution part. I can tell you the Canon bests the other two for pure resolution by quite a bit...it's not really subtle, but you have to see it on a 1920x1080 LCD to see the difference.

The "filmlook" part is going to be pretty subjective. I'm not even sure what he means for sure, actually.

The HD-100 looks it's best on a 720p display. Pulling the image out to 1080p is of course going to make the image suffer.

In any comparison between these camera's there has to be continuity in the resolution. Comparison between them including the HD-100 should be set at 720p30 or 720p25 or 720p24. I think only the Varicam and HVX200 can match those straight up. Or comparing 1080p which leaves out the HD-100 from a comparison between XL-H1 and HVX. Or you could compare 1080i which actually could take place between HD-100 (using the br50 deck's converter), XL-H1, HVX and the Z1. As far as trasport stream is concerned (HDV or DVCProHD) I think there is no comparison. Once the data is captured and uncompressed, who cares how it was aquired.

One thing I feel with certainty is the HD-100 forces you to think about your shots and be a better photographer.

I'm with you, Robert. But the problem is...concerning my case...

...will it be 720p enough to a blow-up to 35mm@big_screen?

Yes.

Take some of the 24p clips I've provided and try them on a single reel.

Emanuel, we can test my camera if you'd like. I'd also like to see it's footage blowned-up to a big screen. Contact me if your interested.
