Which monitor is lying?

I have a large HD LCD television and a small one as well. Unfortunately, most of the footage I play on the smaller one shows mud, and mosaic banding issues, but when I play the same footage on my larger, 30-ish inch HD LCD television, it looks awesome.

Does anyone know why?

I don't know much, but I'm thinking you should test it out on other TV sets as well. Maybe a friend or family members.

Maybe you we're playing 1080 24p footage on the small one and 720 60p footage on the big one since the 1080 mode has much more defects. Sorry, I couldn't help my self.

I'd say that maybe the bigger set is more suited for 1080 24p content since a lot of the older HD TV's aren't. Also perhaps the gamma curve is at a different setting.

Are you hooking both up through HDMI? Because if you're hooking up HDMI to the bigger TV and component to the smaller TV, their will be a slight difference in picture quality.

1) All footage is 1080 24P.

2) The larger LCD HD tv that shows the footage well is about two years old. The smaller LCD HD tv that shows the footage as mud and artifacts is two months old.

3) I used the HDMI connection on both tv's.

the smaller one does some conversion on the fly, since I assume its resolution is lower than 1080. Could be that conversion sucks. But you should test it. also see if your small monitor is 1:1 pixel mode, and test that. If it hasn't, you can use your NLE to cut a part of the frame with the exact resolution of the small monitor, and play that clip to see if that's indeed the problem.
