Hi, guys. I own a late 2009 27 Imac. But it is really struggling to handle video above 2k :(
Which mac do you think would be able to handle 4k Raw files from the O7Q for good price ?

Thanks.

Can you define what you mean by 'handle?'. I've got a Macbook Pro, late 2013, with 16gb ram and a 2Gig GPU - I'm able to use it to grade the 4K Raw files in Resolve - but can't playback in realtime (more like 4-5 fps) and conversion to ProRes 422 UHD is around 1-2fps in Resolve. 2K Raw playback is pretty much in realtime and conversion is more like 19fps.

If you want realtime playback I imagine you'd need something pretty meaty.

On a new MacPro 2013 (2x D700, 64GB, quad-core) in DaVinci (full version to use both cards) I can play realtime 4K up to 35fps (incl 9+ nodes). Output to 4K ProRes 422 HQ is about 26fps, so pretty good. I think the best option for budget is the latest iMac with the GTX 780M 4GB Card, I did not tested this system but to run DaVinci Resolve Lite I can imagine its pretty good.

Colinelves, i was talking about realtime Play. The Mac Pro seems very good buy very expensive and still a very recent product, the iMac i don't know when was The last update. I might come out a new version with retina display ? The MacBook Pro seems a really good option for portability.

Colin and McCreedy, you've just saved me further testing what I suspected. I have Colin's mbpr setup and was debating going to McCreedy Mac Pro setup once I saw resolve choking on real time playback of 4k yesterday.

in reality I went into the clip settings and changed what I think is the playback setting to quarter res, then was able to playback in 30fps. This might just be reality for things like 120fps burst in 4k if we get it. So I'll have to do some workflow testing round tripping to fcpx and let resolve output 4k later if required for the project.

I started looking yesterday if I could put an extra gpu or two in my sonnet echo tb2 box I use for 10gbe. Seems like it's almost a thing but not really. I'd have to use a tb to express card adapter and buy village's express card gpu box. Then it's a maybe. You would think with Mac Pro out and nab around the corner their might be something soon. There is a silver stone box in the works. It might just be nice to get those render times down and stick with the mbpr for 6months... I'm really thinking 4k compressed is where I'll be living for 4k once out and mbpr will probably handle it fine up to 60? 100? In real time

more bummed I guess I won't be able to drive 4k raw output to a cheap 4k seiki screen, but I guess that will be fine once in prores...?
