Which Mac is faster?

Sorry for the ignorance- but which is faster, a 2.16 ghz Macbook Pro laptop with 3 gh memory, or a Mac Pro G5 with dual 1.8 processors and 2gh memory?

I used to have a PowerMac dual G5 with 2GB of RAM and the video card upgraded to an ATI x800XT, and found it to be about the same in terms of performance as my 2.4Ghz MacBook Pro with 2GB of RAM, although I felt like the MacBook was slightly faster. That was based only on my sense of things, not any hard benchmarks or tests. If you're deciding btw the two, I think you would be better off with the Intel chip since the powerPC processor is fast becoming obsolete. The current versions of a number of apps, including After Effects and Final Cut Studio, are Intel only, which will also be the case with Snow Leopard when it comes out in the fall.

Desktops are generally faster all around but these are apples/oranges systems to compare. Anyways these days a G5 is pointless because the current version of FCP no longer supports it. I'm assuming you're asking for buying advice. If it's between these two machines, definitely go for the MacBook Pro.
