which lens on 7d to match HVX zoom range - or more?

Just doing some research into the 7d thing -

i am liking the latitude that these things deliver in the dynamic range - clean blacks / details in brightness etc etc.

What lens would replicate the approximate wide to tele range of my hVX ? (wide to 13 x zoom)

Or even better - it there a lens that will go from approximately the same wide to longer - as a water sports shooter on the hvx i was always wanting a little more on the tele end - something approximating 20x would be nice - without having to put a new lens on.

For Super wide shots - I will go with a dedicated prime WA lens - .

I dont know the HVX - but I have an EX1

The canon 28-200 is the closest

For water action you really need a 400 - which is slightly longer than the EX1 full zoomed

The 400 is such a large lens as to be hard to stabilise on a tripod and actually heavier and larger than the EX1

Living in surf land myself Im probably going to stick with my EX1 for surfing - maybe leave a 1.5 comverter on it while using the DSLRs for wide

DSLRs are a challenge at the longer end I can assure you - with no stabilisation, and terrible Jello

I second what morgan more has said.
No way will you get a 20x zoom on aps-c, even 10x is pushing it.
I think Tamron and Sigma do that sort of "super zoom" range BUT you're looking at a severe drop in aperture towards the long (maybe f/3.5 wide to f/6.3 tele) end AND horrible distortions, probably barreling at the wide end and pinsusion at the tele. You may even find some nasty vigneting too.

I aslo realised the 28 is not an acceptable wide on a 7d

You really need to start at 18

So 18-300 is what you are after - I doesnt exist AFAIK

Had a look at Warehouse Express, Tamron do a 18-250 and a 18-270 VC, BUT (In big technicolour capitals!) You're looking at f3.5-f/6.3, as I said in my first post. Also the optical compromises will be HORRIBLE!

To be fair the optical compromises may not be that bad on '1080' resolution

BUt my hopes would not be high

Again I stress the difficulty of actually using a DSLR with a long lens
