Which is a better audio file?

What is a better audio to edit with in FCP - .wav or mp3?

Reason I ask is that I used my new Zoom H4N audio recorder last week on a shoot and I recorded the audio in .wav format but noticed I could encode the audio into a mp3 file if I wanted to. Would I be able to import that file right into FCP or do I need to go through STP first?

thanks

Do not use MP3. This is a distribution/end-user format. A few questions have popped up around here lately about use of MP3 files for video/film, and the truth is that MP3 files are highly compressed and must be converted to AIFF or WAV in order to work within FCP.

Furthermore, audio for TV/film runs at 16-bit/48kHz. So stick with that.

MP3 conversion to WAV or AIFF can give okay results. That's okay, and not great. And that really depends on how compressed the MP3 is. Using MP3 as an audio recording and editing medium is like editing with footage form a DVD.

Again, go with the native audio resolution for your productions, especially since you have the capacity to record it. A 16/48 WAV will come right into FCP without a problem.
