Which input do I use for Live stream?

I am going to be shooting a live event and needed to stream it to their site using ustream. Just need to know which plug (s) I need. Thank you guys.

You have two video output options on the HMC40; Component and HDMI. Component is analogue and HDMI is digital. The component output is taken from a proprietary Panasonic plug for which you need a jumper cable that came with the cam.

It really depends on the hardware/software you will be using to send the encoded video to ustream. Unless you have a fairly robust system that can process the uncompressed HD signal coming over the HDMI cable, you may be forced to work with the SD composite signal from the A/V out jack. I've used livestream.com and adobe flash media live encoder for webcasting and it will only use SD signals captured with an NTSC capture device or DV captured over firewire (which the HMC40 doesn't have). To send an encoded HD signal requires significant hardware.

As others have stated: it all depends on the capture device you are using on the computer doing the live streaming. We use our HMC40 for all our live broadcasts (www.BeThereIsrael.com) and use a very cheap and simple composite to USB capture device. Since we usually have to rely on a cellular internet connection, the quality of the actual broadcast is less than the quality of composite video, so there would be no advantage to using component or HDMI going into the computer. That is all a matter or your internet connection speed.

Besides the camera, what are you planning on using to do the streaming? You can use a hardware solution like the Teradek Cube, which will take HDMI and send it straight out the servers without the need for a computer, but it's not cheap and I don't know that it works with UStream. Otherwise you need a computer, a capture device and the software to broadcast (usually provided by the CDN: Ustream, LiveStream, etc)

We use a really cheap capture device running on a newer MacBook Pro carried in a hip-pack for our "lite" rig, and an Edirol video mixer, running into a Canopus ADVC100, running firewire into a Mac Mini for our multicamera rig. For the multicamera rig, we have long Mogami cables that run out to the cameras that carry the video and audio from the camera as well as two-way communications for the operators. We use LiveStream Premium and have been very happy with their technology and especially their customer service and support.

Hi guys,
I'm a sailing journalist (www.zerogradinord.it) and I've to broadcast some press conferences and some live interviews on LiveStream. I've a Panasonic AG-HMC40 and I need to buy the capture device to send the signal on LiveStream through a last generation MacBook Pro 15" (with Thunderbolt port).

I will pay for the HD pack, but I think that it will be enough to send a good SD signal.

Can you explain to me something about the video capture device that you are using to do the same? I'm looking around for some solution: if is chep it's better, but it is not so important. The important thing is to broadcast without any kind of problem.

Many thanks in advance.

I think the one thing that needs to be stated here for the record and has been my experience in testing, it doesn't matter what kind of camera, capture deivce or computer you have to get it on the internet...if you don't have the upload speed it will not look good on the other end. Even a standard definiton video IMO needs at least a 1-1.5mbs upload feed. Now I know the rest of the world outside of good ole' Maine here does have ISP's that provide a good upload with their standard household connections and even better on business and corporate levels. The internet connection is the first thing I tell people when they ask me about it.
