I'm looking at these Canon HD lenses for ENG/EFP work and want a lens that I will keep if I upgrade my camera in the future. Anyone have experience with these?
KJ 21 ex 7.6 B IRSD (ENG - HDgc Series)
HJ 21 ex 7.5 B IRSD (EFP - Broadcast)
HJ 22 ex 7.6 B IRSD (ENG - Broadcast)
We've never used those lenses but we have a KJ series lens and we are evaluating an HJ series lens and so far corner to corner sharpness, and overall sharpness is noticeably better.
It actually seems like focus assist, and focus in red, work better with the HJ series because there is more detail.
KJ and HJ series are very similar glass. Price wise the KJ series are slightly cheaper I think... but I have used and own several in the HJ series and they are great. You couldn't go wrong with any of these lenses... I would go for best bang for the buck.
I was able to get a demo of the KJ 21 ex 7.6 B IRSD and the HJ 21 ex 7.5 B IRSE for the weekend.
So far my observations are that the sharpness is very similar with all the lenses on the HPX500. I understand that the difference would be more noticeable on a Varicam. I did test the HJ 22 ex 7.6 B IRSE and it was so similar to the KJ (on the HPX-500) that I did not ask to demo it.
Here are the differences that I observed in my initial comparison:
The KJ breaths a bit, is about 4lbs and is $6000 less
The HJ hardly breaths, is about 6lbs and is $6000 more
I am going to spend some time with the HJ tomorrow to see if I can hand hold a camera with a 6lb lens. If the HJ is too heavy then the decision will be easy. If I can handle the weight, then I have to decide if saving $6000 is worth having little to no breathing. Or, put another way, is it worth $6000 to have little to no breathing.
Me and most of my friends use the HJex21x7.5, its considered by many to be the best lens on the market, with doubler of course. There's no point in buying a high end lens without doubler
for me and most professional, teh breathing on the cheaper lenses is unbearable
you can get these hi end HJ series lenses on the used market for between 10k to 20k which is often less that the new price of the KJ series and well worth it since you always be able to sell it at any point for nearly what you paid whereas the used value of KJ series will plummet like the value of GM or Chrysler
