Which has more resolution?

If I have my camera in squeeze mode do I get more resolution than if it is in 4:3?

The 4:3 image seems to be getting blown up from what I see on the 16:9

No, the horizontal resolution is identical, vertical is less, bacause it is just cropped from the 4:3 image. Pixel resolution is the same (but the "quality" of the vertical pixels is worse). In 16:9 the pixels are not square but rectangular.

If the camera had "native" 16:9 sensor the real resolution would be the same, not only the pixel resolution. But even in that cas the resolutin would not be better.

Actually it does not matter if you shoot 16:9 squeeze or 4:3 and crop & stretch it, the end result is the same. Either the camera does it or you do it in post.

Petrus, your post would be accurate for the DVX, but not the HVX; this post is in the HVX forum.

The HVX has native 16:9 chips, and "squeeze" mode on the HVX does deliver the most resolution the camera is capable of.

When you switch into 4:3 mode it does a "center extraction"; it ignores the extra width of the CCD on the left and right edges and just uses the center. The result is full vertical resolution, not stretched.

It's not higher res than the 16:9. However, on the LCD you're seeing it "blown up" because the LCD on the HVX is 4:3-shaped, so when you go into 4:3 mode it can display the image larger. So that's not really how you want to judge it; you need to see it on a TV or preferably a production monitor to see what's really happening.

This doesn't sound right. Even though the HVX200 labels it as squeeze mode it is true 16x9. This is not the same as cropping 4x3 and stretching it in post. You will get much better results in cameras squeeze.

"nevermnd"........Barry beat me to it!
