Which Follow Focus ?

I did not need to shim my microFollowFocus for the stock lens.

dennis I am even more confused now. 360 is important for cinema lenses, but aren't all cinema lenses already geared?

The Cinevate follow focus (coming very, very soon :-) is completely height adjustable, and will work with pretty much any camera or lens fitted with .8 gears. Our lens gears currently available are anodized aluminum, universally adjustable, and very importantly...can rotate freely beyond 360 degrees. Our testing with cinema lenses has shown this to be very important to manage full focus range.

I need it so badly I can taste it!

I said the Zacuto rods worked with the Redrock D gear and Redrock FF. No shims are required. What doesn't work is the Chrosziel mattebox AND Redrock FF on the stock lens. I can use one or the other, not both at the same time. I can also use the Redrock FF on an adapted 35mm lens WITH the mattebox, because the camera doesn't have to be raised higher than the mattebox for that. For users with 35mm adapters who want a FF for the ADAPTED lens, I heartily recommend the Redrock follow focus. For users who want to use a FF on the STOCK lens with a Chrosziel mattebox, I suggest looking at a different FF.

EDIT: Please see later post for correction. The RR FF works fine with the stock lens and Chrosziel mattebox.

you must also mean "when using zacuto rods"? I have a chrosziel matte box with rr rods and the redrock microFollowFocus with the stock hvx lens and they work super together

Mind posting a pic? I'd be happy to get that combo working for me, but don't see how a different set of rods could make a difference. I've read the Redrock "Workaround" instructions and believe I set it up accordingly...so maybe the Zacuto rods are part of the incompatibility.

I see this more of a limitation of the mattebox than the FF...It doesn't seem like the mattebox should dictate the height of the lens axis relative to the rods, but the Chrosziel for the HVX does just that. Maybe I'm missing some adjustment.

EDIT: I took another look based on your experience and Brian Valente's post. I ignored the "workaround" instructions and just set up the lens gear fully engaged. By extending the Redrock follow focus laterally, so it engages the gear from the side (3 o'clock on the lens) instead of from below and to the side (5 o'clock) the camera body doesn't have to be raised to accomodate the follow focus gearbox. Now I'm not sure why there are workaround instructions because it works just fine set up in the "obvious" manner. Now I can heartily recommend the Redrock FF regardless of mattebox :)

So I can buy the Zacuto "universal baseplate", a Redrock Follow Focus kit, and a Chrosziel (or Petroff) mattebox and expect it to all be friends?

That's in my shopping cart right now, but I'm hesitating as I read this post...

Hi James

Yes, that should work fine - Redrock is based on standard 15mm rods (60mm center to center) and I know Zacuto is based on same standards - just get a rod-mounted mattebox for 15mm and you are set.

Cheers

Brian

Brian, does the Micro Follow Focus Indie bundle work with the 15mm Cavision Rods? And does this system work for 35mm lenses and the stock panisonic DVX lens? Thanks.

My vote is with the Chroziel. So simple yet beautifully machined. Hard piece of machinery to screw up - even a cave man can pull focus.
