Which Devise "INCREASES" Sony EX1 Video Quality ??

There IS a devise that can connect to the Sony EX1 that helps to increase the quality, etc, of the footage. I've seen it mentioned on some of these forums in the past, but I just can't remember what it's called. I also remember that it is rather expensive, but many claim it's well worth it.

If you know of this devise, please tell me the name, model, and where I can get one for our EX1. We're going to need it because we intend to edit EX1 footage along side Red-One footage in an upcoming program, so we need the quality of the Sony images as good as is possible.

Thanks.

Hey George! Do you have an EX1 now? If you have the old model witrh only an SDI output the Sound Devices PIX 240 is a great recorder:

But if you have an EX1R with an HDMI output, you can save money and get the PIX220 for a thousand dollars less:

Hi there Chad,

Yes, we do have an EX1, but not the 1R. We're using it to shoot our secondary scenes, and our Red-One for all primary cinematography.

Financially, we are at our absolute bottom, and have no more money for extra things at this time. In fact, since I started this post, we have realized that there is no way we're going to put out the kind of money it would take for a nanoFlash or the like, just to increase the quality of a secondary camera.

We just have to be happy with what we've got, and nothing wrong with that. ;)

When we get to the sound part of post production, I'll let you know.

Take care.

Cool George!
I've found that even the compressed footage captured on the card stands up to color grading quite well. Maybe do some tests to see if you actually need to capture at a higher bit rate.

Cheers!

I'd look at the BMD recorder (under $500 usd with two 64gig disks)

Yesterday we ran a test with an EX3 going to both it's SxS card and to ProRezHq, so absoultly identical shots...

Watching on a 16 foot screen on a Callibrated Christe2200 in P3 (wide gammut) in DCi2K, so they were scaled up from HD

Everyone in the room could instantly and correctly idenitfy the SxS and ProRez, the SxS was that poor when seen side by side with ProRex external recorder.

Secondaries were nearly impossiable with the SxS due to excessive compression.. at least we could grab some stuff acceptably with the ProRez, so the cost of the recorder is more than offset by the cost of roto and tracking masks when gradeing the SxS media.

End game for us is that the SxS is first limiting factor in useing the EX3 for drama, the kit lens is probbaly the next limiting factor, we will test that tomorrow.

Yeah I guess when you blow it up to movie screen size all the failings of SxS will be exposed. I'm only shooting for web and TV, so any benefit of shooting ProRez gets lost on the medium. Still, I would love to have one of those Sound Device recorders!

Which sensor is in the Red One? If it's the original Mysterium, then you will have a chance of getting EX1 footage to match. If it's the newer Mysterium-X then you will not have a very easy time matching (maybe impossible), the difference is too great.

BTDT.
