G-Drive external drives are a tad flaky... not as bad as LaCie, not as bullet-proof as Glyph. For instance, I have one G-drive that works on two of three of my FireWire ports... don't know why it doesn't work on all three, as most other drives do, but I've never had issues like that with a Glyph... and Glyphs live forever!
Speaking of external drives:
I've had small problems with OWC drives; LOTS of problems with LaCie. My oldest recording drive is a Glyph (now over five years old, in regular use, transported to location recordings more than once a week, never a hiccup). I've had many other drives die, crash, fail since then. So, everything critical goes to Glyph. I've got five of them, of various types. None has EVER had a problem of any sort.
Wood? No... I'm ready for it... my recordings are triple-redundant, just in case. And everything stays well backed-up 'cause I need to keep clearing 'em out for new projects...
I use all kinds of drives, I have no brand loyalty.
I expect them all to one day fail, but lately they get too small before they fail.
In the past, they all seemed to fail,
nowdays, they all seem to be reliable.
I get the best bang for the buck, and buy whenever there is a deal...even if I don't need one. That way I always have one to transfer to in the even I suspect an eminant failure.
The only drive I avoid is the Lacie....they have more problems with their contacts going bad or breaking than the actual drive going bad, but still, makes the drive not work.
